Building a silo into a house

My husband and I have started building a grain silo into a house. We started in February 2006 and are just now coming to the framing part. We are new to the whole green idea but want to use it throughout our build. Unfortunately we are newly weds and are low on funds and time. We only work on the silo on the weekends because I work and my husband works and is a full time student. Our problem thus far with building green has been finding product availability, that is affordable and is truly green. Hopefully by salvaging a forgotten grain silo (an existing structure), we are already helping the environment.

Green Jobs and the New Green Economy; Green jobs are jobs that provide products and services which use renewable energy resources, reduce pollution, conserve energy and natural resources and reconstitute waste. So what do green jobs mean for the middle class? First, quite simply, it means more jobs. At a time when good jobs at good wages are harder and harder to come by, it is critical we find new and innovate ways to create more such jobs. Building a new power grid, manufacturing solar panels, weatherizing homes and office buildings, and renovating schools are just a few examples of ways to create new good quality jobs – green jobs – and strengthen the foundation of this country at the same time. Second, more green jobs mean more money in your pocketbook at the end of the month. If we create jobs that aim to reduce your energy costs – like your electric bill and your home heating bill – that means you have more disposable income for other things. Creating more green jobs has multiple benefits. It helps the economy as a whole; it helps our environment; and it will save you money.

Now people working at the Gulf have trouble with chemicals in products. I reported it here this would happen. Just as many tried to report before the firefighters became ill at ground zero. Such a shame that no one listens until it is too late. There is no reason the people have not been wearing respirators, and no reason the leaders did not demand that they wear protection.

New Incentives for Solar or Wind System

We all know solar panels make sense for many American households (and for some - wind power as well). The hurdle most of us have been facing is the high cost of installation coupled with the feeling that the previous cap on federal tax credits, just wasn't enough to motivate us into taking action.
New legislation gives upgraded and extended tax credits (removing the previous $2,000 cap) for residential wind and solar systems installed between 2009 and 2016.
The good news: Starting in 2009 the federal tax credit for residental PV solar and wind systems will be increased to a true 30% (of installation cost), which will be applied to the bottom line of your taxes.
Let's take a look at how much better the new incentives will be. As an example, let's say you are looking at installing a PV solar system at your house and the installation cost is $38,000 (in the state of Delaware).

Small wind turbines will qualify for up to a $4,000 tax credit under the new system. With more affordable residential sized wind systems becoming available, don't be surprised if you see wind becoming more mainstream like solar.
Credits for solar hot water do not change under the new plan. It will remain at 30% of the installed costs with a cap of $2,000. The cap is usually enough to cover about 30% of most projects.

Please Read and I want to Introduce Dina Padilla

I wanted to introduce a friend that is also a member of the group ACHEMMIC I posted info about about a week ago. DINA_PADILLA has joined us here at Greentv.
Dina is running for Insurance Comissioner in California. If you didn't read about our group and the Press Release recently regarding the New Research Paper written by physicians, researchers, and scientists. I hope you will check it out.
It is good to know that a person that cares about environmental issues and is very involved with the work to educate the world about indoor mold is running for office. Too bad she is not running here in Delaware. Many don't concern themselves with this issue, because it is mainly hidden from the public other than the few articles I post on ocassion.
This illness can happen to anyone, I never imagined I would be involved with trying to educate people about mold and water damaged buildings, the chemicals in our products, and having to deal with polititians. I had such hope for a good and healthy life raising my daughter and eventually working and enjoying my life.
All my hopes and dreams ended the day I got this terrible illness. Now with my husband having quadruple bypass surgery I suspect we will lose what little we have since we have no insurance, no disability, and were already hanging by a thread. We had the best insurance, a 401, life insurance and all is now gone. I documented the entire journey and all the letters I have written and received from our leaders. Many of us with this illness have compared the letters received and it is like some form letter and not one has taken the time to do anything other than the legislation that was introduced by Congressman Conyers several years back but of course nothing was passed to help the so many that are ill. But even Geo Bush had water damge in the 90's while Governor, and there have been quite a few Governor's houses where millions were spent remediating.
Dina has posted the real truth at her link, and tells a story of what is going on behind the scenes. It is bad enough to have this illness, but to know the politics, greed, and deceit is simply criminal.
Thank you Dina for telling the truth-- which is worth reading. Many of our schools have serious water damage, and teachers are a large group getting ill. Our children deserve more, our teachers deserve more. My family deserved more... Sorry but it has been an exhausting journey, and I am quite tired.
I will again add the link I posted about a week ago below in case anyone missed this important info:

Today, an important new research paper was announced. This paper gives a name to an illness that has been affecting people around the globe over the past few decades. The name of this illness is Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome Caused by Exposure to the Interior Environment of Water-Damaged Buildings (CIRS-WDB). The report is titled:Research Committee Report on Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome Caused by Exposure to the Interior Environment of Water-Damaged BuildingsThe paper discusses "the current state of the science regarding human health effects acquired following exposure to the multiple microbes and microbial contaminants and their metabolites found in the interior environment of water-damaged buildings (WDB). These contaminants include but are not limited to fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes, and mycobacteria and their toxins; as well as inflammagens from fragments of fungal structures; and beta glucans, mannans, hemolysins, proteinases, spirocyclic drimanes and microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs).""Several consensus statements have been composed in the past decade. Yet none have included (a) assessments made by physicians involved with diagnosis and treatment of these adverse health effects; (b) academic papers written by physicians reporting both baseline and treatment data on the human illness; (c) reporting of results from published studies using treatment protocols or studies on prospective human or animal experimentation; (d) reporting based on objective parameters found in affected patients; and (e) clinical status after interventions. Despite these substantial shortcomings of pertinent information, these prior consensus statements are being used (i) in legal matters to report the state of human health effects from exposure in WDB and (ii) to serve as the basis for public health policy."This groundbreaking new paper will give hope to many people who have been struggling to find medical treatment for this illness. Those who have been harmed by indoor contaminants in water-damaged buildings include a diverse group of people from all walks of life and from locations around the globe. Earlier this year, a unique new group was formed. This group is called the Action Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminants (ACHEMMIC). It's comprised of physicians, scientists, researchers, indoor air quality experts, industrial hygienists, building engineers, teachers, advocates and others who are working together to promote the truth about the health effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants. ACHEMMIC's membership is growing rapidly and includes individuals and organizations throughout the United States and other countries including Canada, Australia, Portugal, Israel, and the Bahamas.ACHEMMIC has adopted this new research paper as its position statement. To download a copy of the paper, read the press release, or purchase a printed copy of the paper, go to: http://achemmic.com/positionstatement.htmlACHEMMICAction Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminantshttp://achemmic.com

Research Shows Controversial Illness is Real and Treatable

CHARLESTON, S.C., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Policyholders of America (POA) released a consensus statement written by treating physicians and researchers in the field on the mechanism and treatment of illness found in people sickened by exposure to water-damaged buildings. This illness has been the subject of heated debate that has resulted in harsh allegations being lobbed at patients by experts hired by industry to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the illness. Today however, so-called "Sick Building Syndrome" is now unveiled to be very real; it's a chronic inflammatory illness that is easily identified with available lab testing and treatable using FDA-approved medications. The research paper is the first in the field written by physicians with experience treating the illness. Thorough and rigorous, the paper references governmental agency opinions, current published literature and an extensive review of patient data that has made this subject a political and legal hot potato obstructing patient care.
Nearly six months ago, a distinguished and credentialed panel of medical doctors and researchers, all from outside of POA's membership, were assembled and charged with developing a consensus statement on the diagnosis and treatment of a growing public health problem across America: illness acquired from water-damaged buildings. The consensus statement was then peer-reviewed by other medical doctors and researchers. The research paper is being released to help physicians and their patients understand the mechanisms, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols available for sickened patients.
After reviewing hundreds of peer reviewed studies, analyzing hard data from research conducted on thousands of patients, and incorporating published results of treatment of thousands of patients, the authors embarked on this massive assignment with eyes wide open -- knowing that if the resulting research did not lessen liability of the powerful stakeholders involved, industry would likely attempt to discredit the findings.
With the research now concluded, the mysterious illness now has a name: Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome or "CIRS", and when the cause of the illness can be directly linked to a water-damaged building, or ("WDB"), it is called "CIRS-WDB".
Says Co-Author, Ritchie Shoemaker, MD, of Pocomoke, Maryland, "This statement builds consensus by debunking false ideas about illness from water-damaged buildings and establishes the basis by which practicing physicians can assess the complex illnesses these patients experience. We don't have to guess what might be wrong when we have the labs to prove what is abnormal. Patients don't have to suffer any longer after being given incorrect diagnoses such as allergy, stress or depression."
Co-authors included Laura Mark MD from Williamsburg, Virginia; Scott McMahon MD from Roswell, New Mexico; Jack Thrasher PhD of Oakland, California and Carl Grimes HHS, CIEC, President of the Indoor Air Quality Association, from Denver, Colorado.
The 161-page research paper can be found, in its entirety, at: http://www.policyholdersofamerica.org/doc/CIRS_PEER_REVIEWED_PAPER.pdf
A layperson's summary of the research paper follows:

CIRS-WDB is a multisystem, multi-symptom illness acquired following exposure to the interior environment of WDB.  It exists as a recognizable syndrome that is identifiable and treatable;
CIRS-WDB is identified as immunologic in origin, with differential inflammatory responses seen according to (i) genetic susceptibility and (ii) unique aspects of host innate immune responses.
CIRS-WDB consistently involves loss of normal control of inflammation and the resulting "inflammation gone wild."
Treatment of human illness that is acquired following exposure to the interior environment of WDB involves a series of steps, each correcting the physiologic problems one by one.
CIRS-WDB can be readily identified by current methods of clinical diagnoses. This process of diagnosis is supported by (i) identification of unique subsets ("clusters") of symptoms found in epidemiologic cohorts of affected patients; (ii) identification of unique groupings of biomarkers, such as genetic markers, neuropeptides, inflammatory markers, and autoimmune findings.
Patients with CIRS-WDB are often given incorrect diagnoses such as depression, stress, allergy, fibromyalgia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and somatization. Those conditions, when actually present, will not improve with therapies employed in CIRS-WDB.
CIRS-WDB is acquired primarily from inhalation of microbial products that are contaminants found in the complex mixture of WDB.
Re-exposure of previously affected patients will bring about immunological host responses that are enhanced in their rapidity of onset and magnitude, such that these patients are "sicker, quicker."

Melinda Ballard, POA's president said, "About 25% of our members have experienced health effects after exposure to toxigenic mold and other organisms in their homes and of those, the vast majority put on the treatment protocol outlined in this paper have reported back to us that their symptoms have either subsided or vanished altogether. While our experience with these members is purely anecdotal, this research paper is not; the findings are irrefutable. Most importantly, the rigorous science in the paper offers hope to so many who are in desperate need of an effective and inexpensive treatment.
POA is a nonprofit educational organization that, at no charge, helps policyholders receive adequate payment when a property insurance claim is filed. Since it was founded in 2001, more than 2.5 million people have joined, an unfortunate reflection on the manner in which claims are often handled by insurance companies. Its web address is: www.policyholdersofamerica.org. POA is a member of ACHEMMIC (the Action Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminants), a group of scientists, researchers, physicians, indoor air quality experts, environmental engineers, industrial hygienists, structural engineers, teachers and advocates working to advance the understanding of the health effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants. ACHEMMIC's website is www.achemmic.com.

Spanish company touts process to turn urban waste into biodiesel

Spanish company touts process to turn urban waste into biodiesel
By Ron Kotrba
A group of Spanish developers working under the company name Ecofasa, headed by chief executive officer and inventor Francisco Angulo, has developed a biochemical process to turn urban solid waste into a fatty acid biodiesel feedstock. “It took more than 10 years working on the idea of producing biodiesel from domestic waste using a biological method,” Angulo told Biodiesel Magazine. “My first patent dates back to 2005. It was first published in 2007 in Soto de la Vega, Spain, thanks to the council and its representative Antonio Nevado.” Using microbes to convert organic material into energy isn’t a new concept to the renewable energy industries, and the same can be said for the anaerobic digestion of organic waste by microbes, which turns waste into biogas consisting mostly of methane. However, using bacteria to convert urban waste to fatty acids, which can then be used as a feedstock for biodiesel production, is a new twist. The Spanish company calls this process and the resulting fuel Ecofa. “It is based on metabolism’s natural principle by means of which all living organisms, including bacteria, produce fatty acids,” Angula said. “[It] comes from the carbon of any organic waste.”
He defined urban waste as “organic wastes from home like food, paper, wood and dung,” and added that any carbon-based material can be used for biodiesel production under the Ecofa process. “For many years, I wondered why there are pools of oil in some mountains,” he said, explaining the reasoning behind his invention. “After delving into the issue, I realized that [those oil deposits] were produced by decomposing organic living microorganisms.” This, in Angulo’s mind, sparked the idea that food waste and bacteria could be turned into fatty acids that could react into biodiesel. Two types of bacteria are under further development by Biotit Scientific Biotechnology Laboratory in Seville, Spain: E. coli and Firmicutes. The Ecofa process also produces methane gas, and inconvertible solids that can be used as a soil amendment or fertilizer. “There is a huge variety of bacteria,” Angulo said. “Currently, [biodiesel producers] receive a fat that must be processed through transesterification into biodiesel, but we are also working on other types of bacteria that are capable of producing fatty acids with the same characteristics as biodiesel.” He said this would eventually allow producers to skip the transesterification step. Ecofasa may avoid the ongoing food-versus-fuel debate and its expected successor, indirect land use, with its Ecofa process. “It would not be necessary to use specific fields of maize, wheat, barley, beets, etc., which would remain for human consumption without creating distortions or famines with unforeseeable consequences,” the company stated in a press release. “This microbial technique can be extended to other organic debris, plants or animals, such as those contained in urban sewage. You can even experiment with other carbon sources, and this opens up a lot of possibilities. It is only necessary to find the appropriate bacteria.” The company created its name by combining the term “eco-combustible” with F.A., the initials of the inventor. “Today we feel that we can produce between one and two liters [of biodiesel] per 10 kilograms of trash,” Angulo said. That’s a little more than one-fourth to one-half of a gallon for every 22 pounds of trash—or between 24 and 48 gallons per ton of urban waste. “We are working to improve that,” he said.

Last night I spent quite a while reading this info dating back before 1935 and the details and names and places are astounding. This would be of interest to anyone. I can't believe the info I read, but then I guess I should not be surprised. I never wanted to know all the info I have read during the years. But we must know what is truly going on in our country and the corruption is so many of our agencies that are supposed to be protecting the workers, etc. Please take the time to read. The link is in the comment secton below if you can't see it below this statement. Congress nears last push to revamp food inspections

[image]There is no question in Congress or anywhere else that food recalls have demonstrated the need to overhaul the system for inspecting plants producing food for the U.S., whether at home or abroad. Getting it done is the problem. With the November elections near and legislative time fast vanishing, Congress is near its last chance to enact legislation. Even massive outbreaks of foodborne diseases, such as the nationwide egg recall announced this week, has been enough to break the logjam so far.The Senate could vote on legislation next month, but it and the House of Representatives need to resolve big differences on the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act then or in a lame-duck session after the election. The looming possibility: The whole issue could be pushed over to the new Congress that takes office in January."I've kind of got my fingers crossed," said David Plunkett, senior staff attorney for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "I would hope they could sit down and resolve it in a day or week. It's not impossible. It is going to be difficult."It wasn't supposed to be that difficult. Both in the House and the Senate a series of food safety incidents spotlighting problems in inspections and the FDA's lack of recall authority had appeared to galvanize both chambers into action. Government reports said the same thing.A revamp of the FDA's legal authority and duties pushed by Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., passed the House in July 2009.It required food plants to start paying a $500 inspection fee and required the FDA inspect plants making high-risk foods every six months to a year, every three to five years for plants making lesser risk foods and warehouses every five years. Overseas plants could only ship foods to the U.S. if they were regularly inspected. That was nowhere near as often as Department of Agriculture does inspections. The USDA has inspectors in nation's 5,600 meat and produce plants every day. It requires the 1,000 overseas plants supplying meat and produce to have inspections just as often. Still the numbers represent a big increase for the FDA. The FDA has 156,500 plants to inspect in this country and 230,000 foreign plants. It currently does 600 inspections abroad each year. The Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee last November unanimously in an earlier bipartisan agreement sent to the Senate floor legislation an only slightly less tough bill, but one that didn't include a fee.About then everything stopped. A Congressional Budget Office estimate of the cost of the Senate bill, efforts of Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., to ban food containers containing Bisphenol A (BPA), concerns about the impact of the legislation on small producers affected the debate. Mostly it appeared thought that the Senate consideration of health care, a Supreme Court fight and other issues kept pushing the revamp back."I am really disappointed," said Tony Corbo, legislative representative for Food and Water Watch. "Consumer groups were promised in April that it would come up after Easter. Here we are six months later."Last week, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Health Committee announced a bipartisan agreement on a revised proposal saying he was hopeful the bill would pass quickly. It's that revised bill that the Senate could vote on and it's supported by consumer and business groups. It anticipates having high risk food plants inspected every 5 years and eventually every three years, while plants producing less risky products would be inspected every 7 years. It also requires every food plant home and abroad that produces foods for American consumers to create monitoring programs to prevent food safety problems, requires third party testing of products and gives the FDA authority to order recalls and ban imports of high risk food products that haven't been inspected.. "It is better than the situation right now, but I'm not happy with inspection schedule," said Corbo. Plunkett said he too prefers the House bill, but that the Senate bill still makes important changes."From the consumer perspective, the House bill is a lot stronger, the Senate bill is geared toward catching things before they happen. It puts in place a preventative structure."Whether the Senate will act in time to reach agreement with the House still remains unclear, but there remains some hope."It's on our to do list for the fall," said an aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Rep. Dingell said he remained hopeful."Speed is always an MORE at link...

Dust to Dust: The Health Effects of 9/11

[image]Just days after September 11, 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency assured the public that there should be no concern about any health hazards associated with exposure to smoke and debris in lower Manhattan.
This disturbing documentary asks whether the EPA’s pronouncement was based on science or politics. Now many of the first-responders who risked their lives within that toxic chemical soup are seriously ill or dying.
Filmmaker Heidi Dehncke-Fisher and producer Bruce Kennedy reveal how 9/11’s latest victims are America’s forgotten heroes. (Excerpt from sundancechannel.com)

It’s called a Brazilian blowout. “I used to get my nails done at this salon in L.A., and I’ve got really big, curly hair, so every time I went, they were like, ‘Oh! You have to get the Brazilian blowout, it’s amazing,’” says Alexandra Spunt, co-author with Siobhan O’Connor of No More Dirty Looks, a new book that covers what’s in our cosmetics, what they’re doing to our bodies and what we can do to change it.
“We both started real jobs when we were really young,” says Spunt. “Part of our ritual as friends was doing these fun things together. Sort of, ‘We work so hard, let’s go to the spa.’ Truthfully, neither of us are particularly high-maintenance.”
Full disclosure: both O’Connor and Spunt worked the phones as receptionists at the Mirror before moving on to editorial and freelance positions. Though they’re born and bred Montrealers, they’ve spent the better part of the last decade living and working in New York and L.A.
Indeed, when I meet them at a café in Outremont, they are both wonderfully fresh-faced for two women who’ve spent the better part of the past week celebrating at launches on both coasts.
“We’ve always sort of been into beauty,” says O’Connor. “I would go to L.A. and we’d go to Larchmont, do masks at home, silly, girly things because that’s what you do when you’re…” MORE at link...
“Silly and girly,” Spunt chimes in. They’re not alone. Cosmetics are a $35-billion industry in North America. A recent study by British company Superdrug found [image]that the average woman spends $13,500 on make-up in her lifetime, and that’s not including things like manicures, pedicures, waxings and hair dyes. The average adult slathers on 2,000 chemicals every day, in everything from body lotion to shaving cream, deodorant to chapstick. Even those who consider themselves low-maintenance— men, we are looking at you—are not immune.
But back to the salon. “Siobhan was in from New York and a friend of ours was hosting a party and we decided to go get this treatment,” says Spunt. “I started off in a smaller room and Alexandra was in the main area and they had to take me out because it was getting so intense,” says O’Connor. “The fumes were just wild. They opened the windows, our eyes were watering, we were coughing, they gave us goggles.” Which, as they say in No More, seemed perfectly natural at the time.
Once the goggles were off, however, their perspective started to change. What was in the treatment that could both make their hair silky smooth and their eyes water? What they found was pretty scary. Not only did the blowout include natural keratin, it also had formaldehyde—better known as the stuff they pump into dead people. “We’re sold these things that aren’t good for us and we’re told that it’s going to make us look good,” says O’Connor. “At the end of the day, it’s doing bad things to your body and it doesn’t make you look good.”
CRUSADE FOR CLEAN
The day before I met them, Spunt and O’Connor participated in a media conference call that included U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky, Tammy Baldwin and Ed Markey and activist, cancer survivor and beloved Nanny Fran Drescher. The call

[image]The sighting of a 14-foot great white shark forced officials to hastily close beaches in Chatham, Massachusetts. The shark was one of several great whites spotted off Cape Cod this summer. And this time the giant creature was right inside Chatham's harbor. The Cape Cod Times reports beach and harbor patrols scrambled to get swimmers out of the water. The town issued a swimming ban from popular Lighthouse Beach to the border with Orleans.Town and state officials were trying to determine whether the shark was a stray or was accompanied by other sharks, and whether it was safe to reopen the beaches this weekend.Due to the string of great white shark sightings, officials have urged Cape beach-goers to stay on alert. It may all sound like a scene out of "Jaws," which was filmed off nearby Martha's Vineyard. But in reality, the numbers this summer are rare, and the last fatal attack off Massachusetts was in 1936.Meanwhile, the creatures have proven a tourist attraction, with some visitors coming to Chatham hoping for a shark sighting, though from the shore. BREWSTER, Mass. -- Doctors in Massachusetts thought the growth in Ron Sveden's lung was a tumor, but when they looked closer they found an unbelievable surprise.
"I was told I had a pea seed in my lung that had split and had sprouted," said Sveden.
It was not the diagnosis he was expecting. He had prepared himself to hear the words "cancer" and "tumor," but a plant growing in his lung?
"Probably about a half-an-inch, which is a pretty big thing of course," said Sveden.
Sveden had been sick for months. He was already fighting emphysema when his health took a turn for the worse.
"I was not doing too well, a lot of coughing. I was very listless," said Sveden.
On Memorial Day, Sveden's wife called 911, and he was rushed to a hospital where doctors took X-rays and found his left lung collapsed.
For two weeks they ran tests but they all came back negative for cancer, until one doctor found the plant growing in his lung.
"Whether this would have gone full-term and I'd be working for the jolly green giant, I don't know. I think the thing that finally dawned on me is that it wasn't the cancer," said Sveden.
Sveden said he never felt anything growing in his chest, just a lot of coughing.
Doctors suspect he had eaten a pea at some point in the last couple of months and it went down the wrong way, and then began to grow.
"One of the first meals I had in the hospital after the surgery had peas for the vegetable. I laughed to myself and ate them," said Sveden.
His wife, Nancy, was beyond happy with this strange twist of fate.
"God has such a sense of humor. It could have been just nothing, but it had to be a pea, and it had to be sprouting," said Nancy Sveden.
Ron Sveden continues to recover at home.
Friends and neighbors have had fun with this; they sent him pea seeds and canned peas all in good fun.
