  • Mark Hyman, MD: Is Hidden Fung Mark Hyman, MD: Is Hidden Fungus Making You Ill? Huffington Post

    • From: ldelp84227
    • Description:

Is Hidden Fungus Making You Ill?

A hidden fungus may be making you ill. A 35-year-old recently walked into my office suffering from a whole list of health problems (which is why I often call myself a "whole-listic doctor"). She had chronic fatigue, recurrent yeast vaginal infections, itchy ears, dandruff, patchy itchy skin rashes, irritable bowel syndrome, muscle twitching, acne rosacea, malabsorption, headaches and more.

These symptoms can have multiple causes, but in her case all of these problems were related. They were symptoms of an overgrowth of yeast in and on her body. This patient had such a fungus problem that she was practically a walking mushroom!

The cause was clear. She had taken many, many courses of antibiotic over the years. She had been diagnosed with a mostly benign condition called mitral valve prolapse--a problem I believe is over diagnosed and over treated--and "needed" antibiotics every time she went to the dentist. In addition, she had many urinary tract infections for which she took many more courses of antibiotics.

Frequent use of antibiotics disrupts the normal balance between healthy bugs in the gut (lactobacillus, bifidobacter, e. coli) and other potentially dangerous bugs, including yeasts, bacteria and occasionally parasites. These bad bugs are usually present in small numbers in the digestive system. But when the good bugs are killed by antibiotics (i) or not fed with adequate fiber, or the bad guys are fueled with too much sugar, or the gut's delicate ecosystem (ii) is damaged by too much stress, then yeasts and other noxious agents take over.

This can result in many chronic illnesses and symptoms including allergies, chronic inflammation, joint problems, mood and brain disorders, digestive symptoms and more.

In today's post I will explain why yeast overgrowth is such a common problem, why conventional medicine tends to overlook it, and provide you with a comprehensive plan to reduce and remove yeast and rebalance your gut's delicate ecosystem, which sits at the center of your health.

Yeast: A Common But Often Unrecognized Problem

Yeast overgrowth is quite common, but many people don't know they have it and conventional doctors tend to ignore it. In medical school, we are taught that you either have a disease or you don't. It's black and white. However, our bodies weren't designed with an "on" or "off" switch for disease. All diseases occur in shades of gray along a continuum of imbalance along spectrum of disease.

Medical students learn about fungal and yeast problems, but only in a limited way. They know that AIDS patients have severe yeast and fungal infections and need long-term anti-fungal treatment. People with diabetes tend to grow yeast because yeast likes sugar. Babies get thrush and need antifungal treatment. Women get vaginal Candida yeast infections. All of these are well-accepted and treatable problems. Unfortunately more subtle problems related to yeast are usually ignored and not linked to patient's complaints. If a subject is not taught in medical school, it is assumed not to be real. Medical history proves this is a dangerous assumption.

On the other hand, many alternative practitioners over diagnose yeast problems. However, there are many people who do have yeast problems, and most of them don't know it.

There is not enough research on this topic. But the collective intelligence of many doctors working in this field for decades with thousands of patients has helped us learn how to appropriately diagnose and treat this often misdiagnosed problem.

We know that yeast overgrowth can be triggered by a number of things. These include a high-sugar, high-fat, low-fiber diet, impaired immunity, use of drugs like antibiotics, birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids like prednisone, and psychological stress.

Although symptoms of yeast overgrowth are similar to those of many other conditions, you may have a yeast problem if you have these problems (iii)

      General Symptoms

      • Chronic fatigue
      • Loss of energy
      • General malaise
      • Decreased libido

      Gastrointestinal Symptoms

      • Thrush
      • Bloating and gas
      • Intestinal cramps
      • Rectal itching
      • Altered bowel function such as diarrhea (
      iv) or constipation

      Genitourinary Symptoms

      • Yeast infections
      • Frequent bladder infections
      • Interstitial cystitis (irritable bladder)

      Hormonal Complaints

      • Menstrual irregularities like pain, bleeding, etc.
      • Premenstrual syndrome
      • Thyroid dysfunction

      Nervous System Complaints

      • Depression
      • Irritability
      • Inability to concentrate

      Immune System Complaints

      • Allergies
      • Chemical sensitivities
      • Low immune function

      Past History

      • Chronic yeast infections
      • Chronic antibiotic use for infections or acne
      • Oral birth control pill usage
      • Oral steroid hormone usage

      Associated Conditions

      • Sensitivity to foods, chemicals, or other allergens
      • Eczema
      • Psoriasis
      • Irritable bowel syndrome
      • Craving for foods rich in carbohydrates or yeast
      • Toenail fungus

Many tests we use for diagnosis of yeast problems are not definitive or foolproof. It is often a diagnosis that must be made from a patient's story, symptoms, and physical findings on examination. Blood antibody levels for yeasts, stool tests, and organic acid urine tests (v) for yeast metabolites can be helpful if they come out positive but don't rule yeast out if they're negative.

The best method for diagnosis is a good history for risk factors like antibiotic use and symptoms of chronic yeast problems. The symptoms of yeast overgrowth vary from person to person and the response to treatments will vary. Some people may need aggressive treatment, while others many need only simple changes to make a significant difference in their health.

I recommend a systematic approach to yeast overgrowth. Taking the following steps can help overcome this common but under diagnosed ailment.

      Overcoming Yeast Overgrowth

      1. Address predisposing factors. Don't take antibiotics, steroids, or hormones unless absolutely medically necessary.

      2. Eat a diet that doesn't feed yeast in the gut (low sugar and refined carbohydrates, and low mold and yeast in food (see below).

      3. Use probiotics to repopulate MORE and comments at link...

  • Italian Parliamentary Bill 201 Italian Parliamentary Bill 2010 AMICA Association

    • From: ldelp84227
    • Description:

I belong to a group of great people in Australia working on the chemical issues and this was posted regarding  the recent activity in Italy regarding MCS. Things are progressing more and more lately. Many friends have written books,  but one sick  girl, Eva-- who has written a book and done many interviews-- has been involved with this legislation in Italy.

This is a partial and rough translation of a message posted by
Anna Maria Scollo posted to the
      facebook group
      MCS Riconoscere la
malattia anche in Italia (Recognise MCS as an illness in Italy).
The original letter was sent to the Italian Parliament and was authored by
      A.M.I.C.A.
      - Associazione per le Malattie da Intossicazione Cronica e/o
      Ambientale
(Association for Chronic diseases from Intoxication and/or
      Environmental).
      www.infoamica.it

AMICA is a formidable and leading force for the legal recognition of MCS. They
are integral to getting parliamentary papers on MCS into the Italian Parliament
over a number of years. I understasnd there is a new parliamentary paper on MCS
tabled and being discussed in the Italian Parliament this month.

      Multiple chemical
      sensitivity
The original letter by AMICA can be see at the link
below.  If you read Italian (or click your Google Translator button) you
can easily navigate to the related Parliamentary Bills. (Google translator
tends to do a fairly good job with the more formal Italian used in
      Parliamentary Papers)

      http://parlamentosalute.osservatorioistituzioni.it/comments/70

In order to guarantee essential rights to the
sick AMICA has, since 2006, asked the Itlaian Parliament for a framework
      law
for the MCS, possibly with a social recognition of illness that would
      provide
answers to all problems of home, work, school, health care. It is
interesting to note that the legislative
proposals of the various political groups are all more or less similar and
      were
      inspired by international laws.

      Currently
the sick Italians are left alone in their daily fight for survival, i.e.
      in
defending themselves from exposure to detergent s, dryer cloths,
      insecticides
and other chemicals used by their neighbors or from exposure to perfumed
      personal
care products worn by work colleagues, etc.

The lack of specific health protocols
      for MCS
and suitable environmentally controlled Helath care facilities for MCS,
excludes sufferers, especially those who are most seriously ill , from
prescibed Essential Levels of Care. There
is a lack of  consensus on the therapies
for MCS, in fact, patients suffering from MCS often have other chronic
      diseases
as well, which could result from exposure to toxic products for which they
      need
      constant care and monitoring. Currently,
there are several cases of patients with MCS who urgency need to undergo
       pathology diagnosies or routine surgical
operations but are unable to do so for the physical inaccessibility of
      local
health facilities and carers that have experience with the protocols of
      avoidance environmental chemicals.

      It
would take a very simple protocol and at no cost, such as that of the
      Hospital
of New York Mercy Medical Center (
      http://www.infoamica.it/articolo.asp?a=11&sa=34&art=135)
to ensure all MCS sufferers can access safe health care in case of
      emergency
      care.

      The
only important aspect which should be integrated into the proposals for
legislation in the Senate (was evidenced only by PDL On the Chamber's
Scilipoti) is the issue of conflict of interests of doctors of public
structures responsible for administering the MCS because it has already
happened in the past that any links with the chemical industry,
telecommunications (many patients with MCS are also electro-sensitive) or
      with
insurance is curiously coinciding with positions for a denial of the disease
      or
at least for joining the marginal theory of MCS as psychosomatic
      problem.

  • My thoughts on CNN :Toxic Ame My thoughts on CNN :Toxic America"

    • From: ldelp84227
    • Description:

I just wanted to write about the show last night on CNN, " Toxic America,  part 1 and part 2. It is like night and day the differences in the discussions with one side and the other side.
The first night part one was  quite sad where people are living near 14 chemical plants,  and the spokesperson for the chemical companies  talks as if the chemicals don't go past the fence. Surely people are more intelligent than that,  and know the chemicals don't  just stop at the fence-- and people living in the area are not affected. I would like to see some of these people have to live right there in the danger zone. That would be fitting.
Part 2 my friend Ken Cook spoke of the many chemicals in baby's bodies when they are borne. So sad that the  woman doctor in this show says it is absurd to think chemicals cause any illness. That statement is absurd. She spoke of there are no known people that have ever been sick from chemicals.
We all know about the popcorn plant where people were getting liver transplants and dying. I myself cannot have that microwave popcorn in my home. I use to use it years ago when I was okay.
Of course people get sick at many plants and it is common knowledge.
I spoke to Ken Cook after the show and asked him if they ever tested dryer exhaust,  because many of us have such a difficult time because in most condos and apartments the exhaust systems are directly by the windows. I spoke of how if a baby was to be placed in the crib next to the window and the door closed and dryer exhaust was coming through the window-- that would be dangerous for the baby. I suspect many cases of SIDS could be linked in some cases. But surely it would not be good for the baby.
Ken said he never thought of testing dryer exhaust. I hope they can come up with a way to test the air from dryer exhaust. Surely they have that technology.  He is the one that has been doing the testing on many babies umbilical cord blood,  and many others in our country. He also has a site where you can type in most products and see the danger level, etc. He has been in the Senate hearings,  and  I am  honored to know him.
I was disappointed that there is still no mention of the people with irritant induced asthma, reactive airways disease, or chemical sensitivities. Also the lack of environmental doctors that know how to treat these many illnesses that seem to overlap each other.
Today I can't type much because my wrist is hurting,  so I will end here. I hope you will check out the show on CNN-- as I am sure they will be showing it many more times.
Also please check out Bill  Moyers "Trade Secrets" because it seems quite criminal to me the evidence I have read. How can people knowingly poison people. They have families, children-- but I guess money is more important.
The damage is done,  and history will tell the story of the sick having to change the world. Someone has to do it.
I lived a normal life using all these products. As a child I would clean for my mom since she worked so hard. I can remember being a little thing waxing the floors, etc.  We certainly never imagined that the greatest country in the world would allow the people to be guinea pigs.
The attitude seems to be if we don't know about this problem-- we don't have to do anything. The same thing is going on regarding the indoor mold issue. I can remember the man from the Health Department coming to the house and finding mold,  and telling my husband to keep the windows shut. What kind of advise is that when there is mold in the house. So my husband would be shutting the windows,  and I would get sicker. We soon figured out when the ac was on we would have chest pain and headaches, very weak,  etc.  As soon as we got out of there,  we would feel  better.
But when they came in while I was at such a weakened state and removed wallpaper and painted for a month on and off the damage was done. And our county aloud this to happen. I called everyone.
How many of you would have your wife or child waiting for sinus surgery and have the painters come. I don't think very many would. I am sure you wouldn't. But that is how it is if you are a renter. The judges do not protect us, no one does.
I am tired of reading  how children are vomiting blood and crying for help,  and no one knows what to do.
Many of these chemicals are bad enough,  but when some of them are heated up it  causes more fumes.  Just as in  bathrooms when someone showers and the moisture and heat intensifies the shampoo, and products used produce more fumes.  That was one of the first problems my husband and  I first noticed was a particular shampoo was causing both of us breathing problems.
I have cat scans when I first became ill. All my sinuses were infected after months of steroids,  etc. because of  severe uticaria.  After many months of treatment,  I was getting better and a cat scan showed my improvement. Then the landlord sent her sons to come in and paint and remove wallpaper. Then again I had cat scans-- and the evidence was there-- and I needed surgery. Then we had to just get out after living there for eight years. My crime, I became ill in their house. And they just rented it to someone else and did nothing to fix the problem. I returned a year later,  and the people let me come in and take samples which turned out to be the most dangerous molds.
I did everything right. My child was able to read some at two years old. She was very gifted,  and I have all the awards she received.    She  was picked to read with the Governor at one time.  I started getting ill when it was time for her to  enter high school,  and a  time I was not able to be on top of everything as I had planned. I had hoped my child would go to college,  and never have to watch her mom and dad go through what we have endured.
Laws need to be changed in so many ways... Where are our rights as Americans or human beings. I rest my case.

    • From: ldelp84227

I guess some won't like this press release...

      EHHI Press Release

Do LEED-Certified Green Buildings Protect Human Health?

Hartford, Conn., May 25, 2010—Do “green” buildings protect human health from environmental hazards? The answer is “not necessarily,” according to a new report released today by Environment and Human Health, Inc. (EHHI), titled “LEED Certification: Where Energy Efficiency Collides With Human Health.” EHHI is a non-profit organization composed of doctors, public health professionals and policy experts who specialize in research that examines environmental threats to human health.  The organization receives no funding from corporations or businesses.

The lead author of this study is John Wargo, Ph.D., professor of Risk Analysis and Environmental Policy at Yale University. Wargo summarized the study, “Although the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification program has effectively encouraged energy efficiency in buildings, tighter buildings often concentrate chemicals released from building materials, cleaning supplies, fuel combustion, pesticides and other hazardous substances.”

Wargo continued, “The underlying problem is that thousands of different chemicals, many of them well recognized to be hazardous, are allowed by the federal government to become components of building materials. Very few of these chemicals have been tested to identify their toxicity, environmental fate or the danger they pose to human health. Although the primary stated purposes of the Green Building Council are to promote both energy efficiency and human health, even the Council’s most prestigious Platinum award does little to ensure that hazardous chemicals are kept out of the certified buildings.”

Dr. Philip Landrigan, Ethel H. Wise Professor and chairman, Department of Preventive Medicine, at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, reviewed the report and commented, “This is a lucid, well reasoned and balanced critique of the LEED certification process. The authors argue on the basis of carefully assembled scientific data that LEED needs to be amended to better account for the potential health hazards of the toxic chemicals used in modern building materials. Energy efficiency and sustainability are laudable goals and LEED has done much to advance them.  But health is important, too, and now it needs to receive careful consideration in building design.”

Dr. Mark Cullen, chief of Internal Medicine at Stanford University Medical School, reviewed the report and concluded, “Dr. Wargo and colleagues warn us now of the potential for green building technologies—even while they bring important energy benefits—to jeopardize the indoor air we breathe, the water we drink and the overall safety of our habitats. This is a timely lesson from a very sage group.”

Your Toxic Load – How Does It Affect Your Health?

      June 3, 2009
      By Raine Saunders

From cleaning products, to pollution in the air, to the water we drink, to contamination in our food supply from industrial and processed foods, to the clothes we wear, to the houses in which we reside, to the sheets and pillows we sleep on, we are all exposed to tremendous amounts of toxins each and every day of our lives. Estimates by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report that approximately 500,000 chemicals are currently in use, and with each passing year more than 5,000 new chemicals are added. It may seem overwhelming to consider just how much our bodies contend with on a regular basis and attempt to eliminate in order to keep us healthy. With so much exposure, it seems a wonder that any of us could live past the age of one, much less be born. But our bodies are amazing vessels, and they are designed to handle a lot of input, bacteria, toxins, and viruses.

Sometimes, however, we find that our bodies are unable to handle this load. When the body finally gives up and problems start to occur, this phenomena is known as toxic overload. Toxic overload can occur at any time and can have a variety of symptoms including headaches, asthma, allergies, coughing, wheezing, digestive disorders, sore throat, hoarseness, lethargy, mood disorders, itching, eczema, psoriasis, heart problems, osteoporosis, arthritis, chronic fatigue-like symptoms, MS, lupus, diabetes, and many other conditions – especially auto-immune disorders.

According to “The 100 Year-Lie: How to Protect Yourself from the Chemicals that are Destroying Your Health“:

      • The average American carries a “body burden” of 700 synthetic chemcials
      • Chemicals in tap water can cause reproductive abnormalities and hermaphroditic birth
      • A 2005 study of lactating women in 18 U.S. States found perchlorate (a toxic component of rocket fuel) in practically every mother’s breast milk

Randall Fitzgerald reveals how we are deceived by the marketing, advertising, household, food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Labels cleverly try to convince consumers that products are safe by rewording or omitting information about hazardous chemicals in toxins contained in foods we eat, beverages we drink, household products we use, and many other items we rely on to accomplish daily tasks. He also discusses how pretty much everywhere we go – whether it be to the store, a gas station, school, out to eat, the office, a recreational facility, wherever – there are toxic chemicals in those environments continually off-gassing, and exposing us yet to more harmful substances.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

The only “truth” in labeling today is the fact that there is widespread secrecy. Of forty common consumer products tested by the National Environmental Trust in Washington, D.C., during 2004, more than half contained toxic chemicals not listed on the product labels. Two MORE at link...

A Conversation With Aniruddh D. Patel

Exploring Music’s Hold on the Mind

Robert Benson for The New York Times

Three years ago, when Oxford University Press published “Music, Language, and the Brain,” Oliver Sacks described it as “a major synthesis that will be indispensable to neuroscientists.” The author of that volume, Aniruddh D. Patel, a 44-year-old senior fellow at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, was in New York City in May. We spoke over coffee for more than an hour and later by telephone. An edited and condensed version of the conversations follows.

      Q. YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A NEUROSCIENTIST OF MUSIC. THIS HAS TO BE A NEW PROFESSION. HOW DID YOU COME TO IT?

      A. I’ve been passionate about two things since childhood — science and music. At graduate school, Harvard, I hoped to combine the two.

But studying with E.O. Wilson, I quite naturally got caught up with ants. In 1990, I found myself in Australia doing fieldwork on ants for a Ph.D. thesis. And there, I had this epiphany: the only thing I really wanted to do was study the biology of how humans make and process music.

I wondered if the drive to make it was innate, a product of our evolution, as Darwin had speculated. Did we have a special neurobiological capacity for music, as we do for language and grammar? So from Australia, I wrote Wilson that there was no way I could continue with ants. Amazingly, he wrote: “You must follow your passion. Come back to Harvard, and we’ll give it a shot.”

Wilson and Evan Balaban, a birdsong biologist who taught me about the neurobiology of auditory communication, mentored me through my thesis, which was called “A Biological Study of the Relationship Between Language and Music.” When I defended it in 1996, this was unusual scholarship. The neurobiology of music wasn’t yet a recognized field.

      Q. WHEN DID IT GO MAINSTREAM?

      A. Not too long after that. By the late 1990s, all of neuroscience was being transformed by the widespread use of imaging technologies.

Because it became possible to learn how the brain was affected when people engaged in certain activities, it became acceptable to study things previously considered fringy. Today you have the neuroscience of economics, of music, of everything.

I published a paper in 1998 that really surprised people. It was the first imaging study showing what happens when the brain processes musical grammar as compared with what happens when it processes language. From what we learned, this was occurring in an overlapping way within the brain. And this was a clue that the neurobiology of music could give us a new path to access and perhaps even heal some language disabilities.

      Q. HOW WOULD THAT WORK?

      A. One example. There’s a neurologist in Boston, Gottfried Schlaug, who uses music therapy to return some language to stroke victims. He has them learn simple phrases by singing them. This has proved more effective than having them repeat spoken phrases, the traditional therapy. Schlaug’s work suggests that when the language part of the brain has been damaged, you can sometimes recruit the part that processes music to take over.

Music neuroscience is also helping us understand Alzheimer’s. There are Alzheimer’s patients who cannot remember their spouse. But they can remember every word of a song they learned as a kid. By studying this, we’re learning about how memory works.

      Q. RECENTLY, YOU’VE BEEN WORKING WITH A SULFUR-CRESTED COCKATOO NAMED SNOWBALL. WHAT PROMPTED THE COLLABORATION?

      A. Before I encountered Snowball, I wondered whether human music had been shaped for our brains by evolution — meaning, it helped us survive at some point. Well, in 2008, a colleague asked me to view a YouTube video of a cockatoo who appeared to be dancing to the beat of “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys!

My jaw hit the floor. If you saw a video of a dog reading a newspaper out loud, you’d be pretty impressed, right? To people in the music communityMORE at link...

PBS Program “Trade Secrets” – A Moyers Report

PBS Program “Trade Secrets” – A Moyers Report

      THE PROGRAM

In TRADE SECRETS: A MOYERS REPORT, journalist Bill Moyers and producer Sherry Jones investigated the Ross archive – secrets the chemical industry never intended the public to see – and discovered a shocking story. The confidential papers reveal the industry’s early knowledge of vinyl chloride’s dangerous effects, as well as the industry’s long silence on the subject.

The program also reports a much larger story. Buried in the thousands of pages of documents – minutes from board meetings, reports from industry scientists, internal memoranda – is a never-before-told account of a campaign to limit the regulation of toxic chemicals and any liability for their effects, at the same that the companies work to withhold vital information about risks from workers, the government – and the public.

“Almost everyone understands that the chemical revolution of the last 50 years has increased our standard of living,” says Bill Moyers. “The industry has made sure we know how much they have done for us. What the industry does not want us to know are the negative consequences of that revolution.”

As part of the investigation for TRADE SECRETS, Bill Moyers also took part in a pilot study sponsored by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine designed to measure the synthetic chemicals present in the human body – a measurement known as the “chemical body burden.” Even though Moyers has never worked in a chemical plant – or lived near one – he learned that his body contains a chemical soup of 84 industrial chemicals, including 31 different types of PCBs, 13 different dioxins, and pesticides such as DDT. The study’s lead doctor can offer no comfort to Moyers when he asks how his results compare to the larger public – the scientific data simply does not exist to answer the question.

Neurotoxins and ADHD: Connecting the Dots

      2010-05-28-adhd.jpg

My friend Sally used to corral her three teenage children to clean their house every Saturday morning. I was envious of her chutzpa to demand this of her kids, but the part of the story that was always tragic to me was that every Saturday afternoon without fail, Sally's son Sam was sent to his room for hyperactive, "out of control" behavior.

Looking at the cause and effect of the son's behavior through my lens of awareness of how neurotoxic many cleaning chemicals are, I could see it would make sense that the son's central nervous system and brain could be reacting to these chemicals. Symptoms of neurotoxicity include lack of concentration, personality changes, depression, hyperactivity and the mimicking of psychiatric disorders.

Not being particularly "green," the cleaning products Sally would buy for her kids to use were the standard store-bought fare readily available in supermarkets. Examples of neurotoxins found in such products include VOCs (furniture polish can contain VOCs), neurotoxic disinfectants, petroleum distillates, fragrances (scented products are notoriously neurotoxic,) and waxes (VOCs again in the solvents), to name a few.

Pesticides take front seat in the arsenal of poisons that hurt the central nervous system and brain. After all, they are designed to kill. A new study reported in the June issue of Pediatrics, published online May 17, links organophosphate pesticide metabolites found in urine to a much higher incidence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

"Each 10-fold increase in urinary concentration of organophosphate metabolites was associated with a 55 percent to 72 percent increase in the odds of ADHD," study author Maryse F. Bouchard, PhD, of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, University of Montreal, told Medscape Psychiatry.

Another example of subtle neurotoxic exposure children suffer through that most adults miss is to the solvents in markers in art class. When my daughter was in school, one year the math class was the period after art class, and she said that the kids were always "off the walls" in math class. What a tragedy, and one that could so easily be avoided if schools stopped allowing neurotoxic art materials to be used. How many kids thought they were bad at math when the culprit was the colored markers?

I've often wondered why the dots haven't been connected by most people between neurotoxic chemicals and ADHD-type behavior. After all, if a neurotoxic chemical is known to cause depression, for example, and that chemical is being used, why do so few people (and almost no psychiatrists) say, oh my gosh, let's remove the neurotoxin?

At least one thing parents can do is to remove neurotoxins from the home. Here are eleven quick solutions:

Yes to "green" dry cleaning using C02, no to dry cleaning with perchlorethelene (and hanging clothes MORE at link...

      Domestic Detox: Extreme Home Cleaning

WHEN Matthew Waletzke appeared at the door of my East Village apartment to evaluate my home for what he calls “toxic exposure” — the alternative world’s catch-all phrase for potential health hazards like mold, indoor air pollution, household chemicals and electromagnetic radiation (beware your Wi-Fi!) — I half-expected to see a guy in an “Andromeda Strain”-era hazmat suit.

Evan Sung for The New York Times

Matthew Waletzke, a “building biology” consultant, checks the air-conditioner. More Photos »

Mr. Waletzke, however, was dressed casually enough, in a polo shirt and khakis. But the aluminum suitcase he carried was all business, filled with an impressive array of meters, probes and other devices that he proceeded to unpack onto my dining room table.

Mr. Waletzke is a “building biology” consultant, which means he has trained for a year with the Institute for Bau-Biologie & Ecology, a Florida-based, mostly online school that teaches its students to test water, air and building materials for a checklist of toxins and then prescribe a cure. (They will also vet the cleaning products under your sink and the lotions and cosmetics in your medicine chest.)

The training and its tenets are a European import, developed in post-World War II Germany to deal with the problems that emerged as new housing went up and some inhabitants began to suffer what would be later identified as “sick building syndrome,” or a sensitivity to chemicals like formaldehyde used in construction.

I had called Mr. Waletzke not because I’d gone all radioactive, like Julianne Moore’s character in “Safe,” the 1995 movie directed by Todd Haynes about a woman who becomes allergic to her life, but because his specialty seems like an idea whose time has come.

Pollution, we’re learning, is personal. Each year brings reports of a new domestic horror, from the medical waste in the municipal water to the carcinogenic bacteria sprouting in your shower head. Your child’s sippy cup is leaching the endocrine disrupter BPA into his milk (let’s not even think about what’s in his nonflammable pajamas), and there are phthalates in your shampoo (also your sex toys). And if your (bleached, pesticide-soaked cotton) bedding doesn’t kill you, your clock radio just might, say those who classify electromagnetic frequencies as carcinogens.

Books like “Clean,” a “detox” lifestyle guide out last year, blurbed by Gwyneth Paltrow and Donna Karan and written by Alejandro Junger, a telegenic Uruguayan cardiologist, prescribe a course of juice fasting and something more: a whole home detox, with filtered air, filtered water, organic cotton sheets and bleach-free cleaning products.

Dr. Junger, whose own tale of chemically induced irritable bowel syndrome and depression will curl your hair, is certainly not the only home detox evangelist. In “Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret MORE at link...

weightloss.jpgThe Author spent most of her childhood and young adult years struggling with her health. She battled severe allergies, asthma, spastic colon and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for as long as she could remember. She grew up sickly, weak and defeated. She was told not to over exert myself, take my medicines regularly and make the best of it.

At times She wasn’t allowed to play outside, for fear of her allergies and asthma “getting stirred up”. Needless to say, sports were out of the question. During her high school and college years she was in and out of the emergency room with complications from a spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome and poor diet.

She married her high school sweetheart Barry (a musician) when she was 20 and the roller coaster began. They moved from their small town of Evansville, Indiana to Dallas, Texas. Three years later they moved to Los Angeles. Let us spare you the “Jerry Springer details” but all that life on the road took its toll.

She had been the “skinny girl” all through High School, mainly because like a lot of teenagers – She just didn’t eat much.

So of course when Barry and her got married she didn’t have a clue how to prepare food. She just did what a lot of young newlywed women do – She went to the grocery store and bought anything that looked good and was easy to cook!

The married life has taken too much toll on her health and psychologically impaired her confidence. She became someone forgotten about the past, used to be skinny, now 50++ pounds!

It wasn’t easy and she had to crawl before she could walk - BUT SHE DID IT! The girl who couldn’t even run in gym class or do a single pull-up was jogging daily and lifting weights. She couldn’t believe how her body was transforming before her eyes. She went from being the newly frumpy, sickly girl…to a fit, new improved version of her.

The thing that amazed her the most was that her allergies even improved, anyone suffers from them knows how big of a statement that is! She took control of her health, which eventually helped her focus more on her marriage (now 15 years and stronger than ever), dive deeper in her faith, gain self-confidence and reach true happiness.

And she can proudly say that shenever succumbed to any of those slick ads weightloss-diet products. Never once have she used a prescription or non-prescription diet pill!

She went on to become a Nationally Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor and Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant.

New York School Pesticide Bill Becomes Law!

      Wed, May 19, 2010

As expected, New York Governor David Paterson signed the historic New York school pesticide bill into law on Tuesday afternoon. SafeLawns plans to distribute this press release nationwide today:

      Natural Lawncare Advocates Applaud
      New York’s Anti-Pesticide Bill

Natural lawncare advocates are celebrating the signing of a tough anti-pesticide bill by New York Governor David Paterson. The Child Safe Playing Fields Act, which bans the use of chemical pesticides on school playing fields and playgrounds, is being called “historic” by the founder of SafeLawns.org, North America’s leading natural lawncare advocacy group.

“We need to protect children from the toxic effects of pesticides such as weed killers, insecticides and fungicides,” said Paul Tukey, the founder of SafeLawns.org and author of The Organic Lawn Care Manual (Storey, 2007). “Numerous studies indicate these chemical substances are not safe for children, pets or the planet. I believe that the New York state legislature, Senate and governor have ‘fired a shot’ that will be heard around the entire country.”

The Child Safe Playing Fields Act bans the use of chemical pesticides on school playing fields and day care playgrounds, although chemicals can still be used on surrounding green areas and inside schools to combat pests. Chemical companies lobbied heavily against the bill.

Tukey, who consults with municipalities and lawn care professionals across the U.S. and Canada, said achieving adequate turfgrass playing fields with natural, organic methods is easily attainable. In the long run, he said, the organic process is less expensive and safer.

“Numerous examples of natural lawns exist across North America, and studies indicate that the playing surfaces look great,” said Tukey. “Plus, natural lawncare helps the bottom line due to a reduced need for mowing, watering and pesticide applications.”

(New York, N.Y.) Local air quality affects how you live and breathe. Like the weather, it can change from day to day or even hour to hour. Add pollutants in the indoor air of people’s homes and workplaces, and you have conditions that can be extremely serious for people with respiratory diseases such as asthma. Asthma is a serious, sometimes life-threatening respiratory disease that affects the health of millions of people; but it can sometimes be managed if people know how the environment can affect asthma patients. Although there is no cure for asthma, people with asthma can have an active lifestyle and can control the disease through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. This month, which is Asthma Awareness Month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is educating people about asthma, and how they can reduce the severity and frequency of attacks.

“EPA’s clean air regulations have improved air quality, resulting in better protection for people living with asthma,” said Judith Enck, EPA Regional Administrator. “It is vitally important that people understand that they can help control their asthma by knowing the warning signs of an attack, staying away from things that trigger an attack, and following the advice of their healthcare providers. Children are especially vulnerable, but can learn to manage their asthma at an early age with the help of their doctors, teachers, friends, and family members.”

About 23 million people, including seven million children, have asthma. Asthma in children is the cause of seven million physician visits and nearly 200,000 hospitalizations. Thirteen million school days are missed each year due to asthma. African-Americans are three times more likely to die or be hospitalized because of asthma according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Puerto Ricans suffer from asthma at six times the rate of other Hispanic groups.

Pollutants in the outdoor air, including particulates (soot) and ozone (smog) are major asthma triggers. When ozone levels increase, most commonly in the summer months, they can affect people’s health, especially children with asthma. Ozone can irritate the respiratory system, causing coughing, throat irritation, and aggravating asthma. When ozone levels are high, more people with asthma have MORE at link...

Unexpectedly high rate of multiple strains in fungal infection

New research shows that nearly 1 in 5 cases of infection with the potentially deadly fungus Cryptococcus neoformans are caused by not one but multiple strains of the pathogen. Researchers from the Institut Pasteur and the University of Minnesota Medical School report their findings today in the inaugural issue of mBio™, the first online, open-access journal published by the American Society for Microbiology.

"Koch's postulates are criteria establishing a causal relationship between a microbe and a disease that lead to the assumption that the disease is caused by a single strain or its evolved forms," says Françoise Dromer of the Institut Pasteur, an author of the study. "Using molecular analysis of unpurified isolates, we demonstrated that mixed infections in humans are more common than previously thought, occurring in almost 20 percent of patients diagnosed with cryptococcosis."

      C. neoformans is a life-threatening fungal pathogen that is responsible for an estimated 1 million cases of meningoencephalitis. It affects up to 30 percent of HIV-infected patients in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia and despite adequate treatment is still fatal in almost 20 percent of cases.

Cryptococcosis is usually considered to represent the reactivation of a dormant infection. A single isolate of C. neoformans has been thought to be responsible for the disease, but isolation of numerous different strains at the same geographic site suggested infection with multiple stains was possible. Only anecdotal reports of mixed infections have been published to date.

The researchers analyzed clinical cultures collected during a prospective study on cryptococcosis. Using molecular analysis of unpurified isolates they uncovered an unexpectedly high frequency (almost 20 percent) of mixed infections. They further demonstrated that these mixed infections could result from infestation by multiple strains acquired MORE at link...

  • Parents say Regina school isn' Parents say Regina school isn't providing scent-free environment for kids

    • From: ldelp84227
    • Description:

Sadly the children get bullied because they can't breath when near these products that have been put on the market. And this is happening all over our country. All this suffering  so companies can profit.

Parents say Regina school isn't providing scent-free environment for kids

REGINA — Cory and Michelle Weston-Lee say they are dissatisfied with how the Regina Catholic School Division has handled their concerns.

"Everybody has been telling us they're doing what they can," Michelle said. "We have been forced into becoming problem parents, to advocate for our daughter ... We have tried to do this in a friendly way. We have tried to work with the school. I really want to say we became this way because we had to."

The daughter, 11, has been taken to hospital seven times due to reactions to fragrances, her parents said. She was intubated on one occasion. The family says it has had to "fight" for accommodations from their daughter's school, Ecole St. Andrew.

There have been conflicts over postings indicating the school is a scent-free facility, over actions taken when a student wears a scent to school and over supervision on a bus for a band outing.

Division spokeswoman Jennifer Cartwright said, under privacy law, school divisions cannot discuss specific situations. But the division does have policies in place on fragrance-free facilities.

Cartwright said that if someone comes to a school wearing a scent, the situation is handled on a case-by-case basis.

But the Weston-Lees want consistent rules and enforcement — with mandatory suspensions for anyone who brings scents to school.

Cartwright said, in serious situations, students can be taught on a one-on-one basis to ensure they aren't exposed to risks.

But the Weston-Lees don't want their daughter to have to be separated from others students. They noted she can't ride the bus any more because the division said it can't guarantee everyone who had been on the bus previously had not worn scents.

At a school dance, Michelle even stood by the door to "enforce" the school's scent-free status and ended up in a confrontation with another parent who refused to wash off a scent, she said. Michelle and her daughter had to leave the MORE at link...

The big messages we tend to get on cancer: Don’t smoke. Don’t have cancer in the family. Don’t get sunburned.

A controversial new report out last week from the President’s Cancer Panel says we need to pull the curtain back much wider to look at potential carcinogens in our food, our water, our cleaning cabinets, our environment.

Cancer caused by environmental factors has been “grossly underestimated,” said the panel, with a tough eye on the untested sea of chemicals that surround us.

US Labor Department's OSHA requests information on exposure to infectious agents in health care settings
Federal agency seeks to learn best practices in mitigating risks

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration requests information and comment on occupational exposure to infectious agents in settings where health care is provided, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, school clinics and correctional facilities, and settings such as laboratories that handle potentially infectious biological materials, medical examiner offices and mortuaries.

OSHA is interested in strategies currently being deployed in health care and related work settings to mitigate the risk of work-acquired infectious diseases. As such, OSHA would like to collect information and data on the facilities and the tasks potentially exposing workers to this risk; successful employee infection control programs; control methodologies being utilized (including engineering, work practice, and administrative controls and personal protective equipment); medical surveillance programs; and training.

"All workplaces must be safe workplaces," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Dr. David Michaels. "We know that workers in health care and related facilities may be exposed to infectious agents, and they deserve to be protected. Preventing infectious disease among workers also will reduce exposure to their family members and to patients." MORE at link...

OSHA will use the information received in response to this request to determine what action, if any, the agency may take to further limit the spread of occupationally-acquired infectious diseases in these types of settings.
