Scientists hope findings will debunk some growing skepticism about climate change

      Paul Waldie

      From Thursday's Globe and Mail

More than 300 scientists from around the world, including several Canadians, hope to blunt some growing skepticism about climate change with a new report that says global warming is a fact and the Earth is hotter than ever.

“The conclusion is unmistakable – yes, the planet is warming,” said Derek Arndt, a co-editor of the report, called State of the Climate, which was published by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.

“The facts speak for themselves, and speak simultaneously,” said Mr. Arndt, who runs the Climate Monitoring Branch at NOAA. “And, they all point toward the same conclusion – the globe is warming.”

The report – co-edited by researchers in the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia – pulled together data from 10 climate indicators measured by 160 research groups in 48 countries. The scientists compared the figures decade by decade as far back as possible, more than 100 years in some cases. They concluded 2000 to 2009 was the warmest decade ever, and the Earth has been growing warmer for 50 years. Each of the past three decades – 1980s, 1990s and 2000s – was the hottest on record, the researchers said.

This year is shaping up to be even warmer. For the first six months of 2010, the combined global land and ocean temperature was the warmest on record, according to the NOAA.

Mystery Illness Confines Woman To Tent

SOMERS POINT, N.J. - Doctors were perplexed when a healthy young woman from South Jersey developed a bizarre illness. Ordinary household odors make her so sick that she is living in a tent in her parent’s backyard.

      Slideshow: Images From Fox29 Story

A doctor in Texas may have unraveled the mystery, reported Fox29’s Robin Taylor.

Over the past four years, Jennifer Parker's world has changed dramatically. She went from running her own successful landscaping business to living in a tent in her parent's backyard.

"When I go indoors or in a car or in any stores, I get sick," said Parker, 31, who wears an air mask and is treated with oxygen.

The mysterious illness left doctors puzzled. Her symptoms ranged from nausea and fatigue to memory loss and then this bizarre one, pink fingerprints.

"There was a time when every white surface I would touch would turn pink,” said Parker.

At one point, Jennifer ended up in the hospital with convulsions.

"She called my husband and said 'I need mom, but I don't know where I am' and hung up the phone," said Mary Ann Parker, Jennifer’s mother.

Mary Ann has tried relentlessly to find out what's wrong with her daughter and may have finally gotten an answer. Tests showed Jennifer's townhouse was filled with deadly mold.

"I didn't know that the mold was growing in my home because I couldn't see it. It was up in the attic," said Jennifer.

A doctor in Texas made the diagnosis. He says the pink fingerprints were her body's way of trying to rid the toxins.

The illness left Jennifer allergic to household chemicals in everything from upholstery to detergent. She can only eat organic food and takes a half-dozen vitamins.

"My immune system is so weakened from the mold that I'm forced to live out here. It's horrible."

Her parent's backyard has become her bubble as she begins a new medication that should flush the toxins from her system. MORE at link...

Today I am proud to announce a new research paper that has been released by physicians and researchers. I am a member of this group called ACHEMMIC. Below is the press release. A link to download the Research Paper, and a link to the group I belong to ACHEMMIC.com.

Research Shows Controversial Illness is Real and Treatable

CHARLESTON, S.C., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Policyholders of America (POA) released a consensus statement written by treating physicians and researchers in the field on the mechanism and treatment of illness found in people sickened by exposure to water-damaged buildings. This illness has been the subject of heated debate that has resulted in harsh allegations being lobbed at patients by experts hired by industry to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the illness. Today however, so-called "Sick Building Syndrome" is now unveiled to be very real; it's a chronic inflammatory illness that is easily identified with available lab testing and treatable using FDA-approved medications.  The research paper is the first in the field written by physicians with experience treating the illness.  Thorough and rigorous, the paper references governmental agency opinions, current published literature and an extensive review of patient data that has made this subject a political and legal hot potato obstructing patient care.

Nearly six months ago, a distinguished and credentialed panel of medical doctors and researchers, all from outside of POA's membership, were assembled and charged with developing a consensus statement on the diagnosis and treatment of a growing public health problem across America:  illness acquired from water-damaged buildings. The consensus statement was then peer-reviewed by other medical doctors and researchers.  The research paper is being released to help physicians and their patients understand the mechanisms, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols available for sickened patients.

After reviewing hundreds of peer reviewed studies, analyzing hard data from research conducted on thousands of patients, and incorporating published results of treatment of thousands of patients, the authors embarked on this massive assignment with eyes wide open -- knowing that if the resulting research did not lessen liability of the powerful stakeholders involved, industry would likely attempt to discredit the findings.

With the research now concluded, the mysterious illness now has a name: Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome or "CIRS", and when the cause of the illness can be directly linked to a water-damaged building, or  ("WDB"), it is called "CIRS-WDB".

Says Co-Author, Ritchie Shoemaker, MD, of Pocomoke, Maryland, "This statement builds consensus by debunking false ideas about illness from water-damaged buildings and establishes the basis by which practicing physicians can assess the complex illnesses these patients experience. We don't have to guess what might be wrong when we have the labs to prove what is abnormal.  Patients don't have to suffer any longer after being given incorrect diagnoses such as allergy, stress or depression."

Co-authors included Laura Mark MD from Williamsburg, Virginia; Scott McMahon MD from Roswell, New Mexico; Jack Thrasher PhD of Oakland, California and Carl Grimes HHS, CIEC, President of the Indoor Air Quality Association, from Denver, Colorado.

The 161-page research paper can be found, in its entirety, at: http://www.policyholdersofamerica.org/doc/CIRS_PEER_REVIEWED_PAPER.pdf

A layperson's summary of the research paper follows:

      • CIRS-WDB is a multisystem, multi-symptom illness acquired following exposure to the interior environment of WDB.  It exists as a recognizable syndrome that is identifiable and treatable;
      • CIRS-WDB is identified as immunologic in origin, with differential inflammatory responses seen according to (i) genetic susceptibility and (ii) unique aspects of host innate immune responses.
      • CIRS-WDB consistently involves loss of normal control of inflammation and the resulting "inflammation gone wild."
      • Treatment of human illness that is acquired following exposure to the interior environment of WDB involves a series of steps, each correcting the physiologic problems one by one.
      • CIRS-WDB can be readily identified by current methods of clinical diagnoses. This process of diagnosis is supported by (i) identification of unique subsets ("clusters") of symptoms found in epidemiologic cohorts of affected patients; (ii) identification of unique groupings of biomarkers, such as genetic markers, neuropeptides, inflammatory markers, and autoimmune findings.
      • Patients with CIRS-WDB are often given incorrect diagnoses such as depression, stress, allergy, fibromyalgia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and somatization.  Those conditions, when actually present, will not improve with therapies employed in CIRS-WDB.
      • CIRS-WDB is acquired primarily from inhalation of microbial products that are contaminants found in the complex mixture of WDB.
      • Re-exposure of previously affected patients will bring about immunological host responses that are enhanced in their rapidity of onset and magnitude, such that these patients are "sicker, quicker."

Melinda Ballard, POA's president said, "About 25% of our members have experienced health effects after exposure to toxigenic mold and other organisms in their homes and of those, the vast majority put on the treatment protocol outlined in this paper have reported back to us that their symptoms have either subsided or vanished altogether. While our experience with these members is purely anecdotal, this research paper is not; the findings are irrefutable.  Most importantly, the rigorous science in the paper offers hope to so many who are in desperate need of an effective and inexpensive treatment.

POA is a nonprofit educational organization that, at no charge, helps policyholders receive adequate payment when a property insurance claim is filed. Since it was founded in 2001, more than 2.5 million people have joined, an unfortunate reflection on the manner in which claims are often handled by insurance companies. Its web address is: www.policyholdersofamerica.org. POA is a member of ACHEMMIC (the Action Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminants), a group of scientists, researchers, physicians, indoor air quality experts, environmental engineers, industrial hygienists, structural engineers, teachers and advocates working to advance the understanding of the health effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants. ACHEMMIC's website is www.achemmic.com.

  • Use Dog Obedience Training To Use Dog Obedience Training To Bond With Your Dog

    • From: Jenny
    • Description:

Owning a dog that can carry out antics and is very docile and well trained is a pleasure and delight of every dog owner. Owning a dog that in reality pays attention, hangs on to each word and abides by its master would surely be appreciated and awarded. This would firmly strengthen the bond. What’s more, a dog that is well trained knows the way to “socialize” properly with people and other dogs too.

You will definitely feel secure in taking your dog just about anyplace, to the park, vacations, beach, if you know that they will be conducting properly.

Getting to Know How your Dog Feels

Though dogs are not thought to be as refined mentally as humans are, dog obedience training will permits us to comprehend how the dog experiences and behaves.

Dogs are intensely social and are group animals, they fit in to groups and require a head, and we will be their person in charge. If you want to be an effective trainer, your dog must respect you and think of you as leader of the pack. In dog training we will gain knowledge of how to behave like their head and tell them what to do. When we have set up our role as their “pack leader”, the admiration and faithfulness follows next.

But apart from that, our dog is a member of our family, as each member of the family has their part to play, so does the dog. A dog training sitting would let your dog be aware of his or her part and tasks. In getting to know this, every one would be happy to co-exist with one another furnishing a good atmosphere and a strong joyful bond.

If you like the tips above and would like to know further information on typical doggie behavior, including a fantastic resource for training how-to's and loads of detailed information on preventing and dealing with problem behaviors, check out Secrets to Dog Training.

Chemical plants put Del. residents at risk

      July 23, 2010

      <!--Saxotech Paragraph Count: 3
      -->

As a student of the University of Delaware, it came as a shock to me that the state of Delaware holds 19 of the highest-risk chemical plants in the country.

There are 6,000 high-risk plants. Of those, 287 plants have switched to safer chemicals and processes since 1999. In turn, 38.5 million people are now protected. Chemical plants that have not switched to safer processes and chemicals need to be taken seriously. In such a developed country as the U.S., it is hard to find areas surrounding chemical plants that do not contain multiple schools and hospitals, as well as fairly large neighborhoods. This means that if we do not put the pressure on our politicians to support legislation that would force chemical plants to reevaluate the processes and chemicals they are using, then millions of people will remain in danger. Chemical plants are a huge target for terrorists because of the amount of damage they could cause if they underwent an attack. In Delaware, there are three chemical plants that are each putting 100,000 people at risk simply because they have not switched to safer practices.

The House of Representatives passed legislation on Nov. 9, 2009, that would require the highest risk plants to convert their security and processes to safer practices. This legislation is critical, and the Senate needs MORE at link...

It was one whale of a tale... literally.

A couple off the coast of South Africa enjoying a beautiful day of sailing had a terrifying run in with a massive mammal that left them unharmed, but their craft seriously damaged.

"We'd spotted it about 100 meters away and thought that was the end of it," said Paloma Werner, who was on the boat with her boyfriend and business partner, Ralph Mothes. "Then suddenly it was right up beside us."

The couple, experienced sailors who operate the Cape Town Sailing Academy together, had noticed the whale as they cruised through Table Bay, near Cape Town harbor, when it approached their vessel.

"I assumed it would go underneath the boat, but instead it sprang out of the sea," the 50-year-old said.

"I thought surely it can't be on a collision course with us," said 59-year-old Mothes.

The Southern right whale, an endangered species common to those waters which can weight up to 60 tons, shot into the air and smashed into the Intrepid, a 32-foot yacht with a steel hull.

"We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge," said Werner.

Mothes, who was piloting the boat, ducked behind the wheel as the whale thrashed around on the deck and destroyed their mast, before finally slipping back into the water.

"Miraculously nothing happened to us," Werner told CNN.

The moment was photographed by a tourist from Botswana, who was aboard a nearby boat. The couple used their engine to pilot the broken vessel back to shore.

Despite being frightened for their lives, and their boat, the couple aren't holding a grudge against the beast from MORE at link...

Chemicals Law Overhaul Proposed in House

      • CONTACT: EWG Public Affairs, (202) 667-6982
      • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 23, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressional leaders today introduced in the House the first comprehensive overhaul in more than 30 years of a federal law that has been widely condemned for failing to protect Americans against the risks of toxic chemicals.

The legislation filed by Reps. Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) and Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) to reform the Ford-era federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) would fundamentally change the process by which chemicals – current and future – are cleared for use.

The Toxic Chemicals Safety Act (H.R. 5820) would make a number of significant changes in the current approach to chemical regulation, including:

      • Establishing a framework to ensure that all chemicals to which the American people are exposed are reviewed for safety and restricted where necessary to protect public health and the environment.

      • Requiring the chemical industry to develop and provide to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) essential safety data, and improving EPA’s authority to compel safety testing where necessary.

      • Ensuring that non-confidential information about chemicals submitted to EPA is readily available to the public and that critical confidential information is shared among regulators, state officials and workers in the industry.

      • Establishing an expedited process enabling EPA to reduce exposure to chemicals that are known to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic.

      • Promoting research to advance understanding of children’s vulnerability to the harms of chemicals.

Environmental Working Group (EWG) has documented through two landmark reports that chemical contamination among people begins in the womb where the developing fetus is, largely due to the failed federal law, exposed to hundreds of industrial pollutants.

“Not as much as a speed bump dots the current regulatory path that toxic chemicals travel to get on the market, in products and ultimately into people.” said EWG president Ken Cook. “The House plan, along with legislation introduced MORE at link...

Posted by Jane Houlihan inon July 21, 2010 |
    • Over the past decade, Environmental Working Group has uncovered either hazardous or untested cosmetics ingredients everywhere our research has taken us — in product tests, in ingredient label surveys and even in people.

In our biomonitoring studies, we sent blood and urine samples from 20 teenage girls from across the country to the laboratory.  It turned out they were tainted with an average of 13 potential hormone-disrupting preservatives, plasticizers and other cosmetic chemicals. In umbilical cord blood from 7 of 10 newborn babies, we found synthetic musk fragrances that had crossed the placenta from mother to infant to pollute the developing child before birth.

Our researchers have identified 500 products sold in the U.S. that contain ingredients that are banned in cosmetics in Japan, Canada or Europe.  Nearly 100 products have been found to contain ingredients the industry itself has declared unsafe for use in fragrance. Perhaps most disconcerting, our investigations have found that 99 percent of all personal care products are made with at least one and usually several ingredients that have never been assessed for safety by the government or any other publicly accountable institution.

The federal Food and Drug Administration oversees cosmetic safety, but under the shackles of a 1976 law, the agency lacks the authority to review the safety of products before they are sold, or to require recalls of those it knows are harmful.

There’s no doubt Americans want safer products. EWG’s Skin Deep cosmetics safety database logs between 1 and 2 million searches monthly, conducted by people seeking simpler, safer cosmetics from among the more than 60,000 products in our lists. Consumers armed with this information are already driving changes.  Many companies are removing suspect chemicals from their wares as a result. More than a thousand have pledged to make safer products through the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, where EWG is a founding member.

And now, federal legislation proposed this week by RepsMORE at link...

  • Senate introduces bills to pro Senate introduces bills to protect chemical and water plants nationwide | Greenpeace USA

    • From: ldelp84227
    • Description:

Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced a comprehensive legislative package that would help to prevent debilitating terrorist attacks at America’s chemical, drinking water, and wastewater facilities. This legislation requires plants to assess their vulnerability, develop plans to address those vulnerabilities, and requires the highest-risk facilities to convert their facilities to safer processes that don’t have the risk of a catastrophic chemical release.

The Secure Water Facilities Act (S. 3598) and Secure Chemical Facilities Act (S. 3599) would require changes for the highest-risk facilities, preventing undue burdens on small, low-risk facilities while protecting against the greatest threats. Some of the changes that can be implemented at water and chemical plants include reducing the amount of lethal gases stored on-site or minimizing the use of dangerous chlorine gas.

      Millions at risk

Did you know that the Department of Homeland Security has identified over 5,333 "high-risk" chemical plants in the United States? Just 300 of these plants together put 110 million Americans at risk. And on April 2nd a refinery in Washington State blew up killing eight workers. Meanwhile the failed May 1st car bomb in New York's Times Square was a grim reminder of our continuing vulnerability to terrorism.

      Safer alternatives exist

The greatest risks posed by U.S. chemical plants is their use of huge quantities of poison gases such as chlorine. Fortunately safer processes are available for virtually all of them.

In fact, more than 287 chemical plants have switched to safer chemicals or processes over the last ten years. This common sense action has eliminated catastrophic risks to 38 million Americans. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of the highest risk plants have NOT adopted safer processes -- and they won't until laws are passed that require them to do so.

      Chemical industry lobbyists

Since the 9/11 attacks, chemical industry lobbyists, including Dow, DuPont, BP and Exxon have blocked strong legislation. Greenpeace identified 169 lobbyists registered to keep Congress from enacting a strong chemical security law. But in spite of that, last November the House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R. 2868) that will eliminate these risks. And, now the Senate has a new bill that would help save lives. The bills are endorsed by a broad coalition of over 90 environmental, health, and labor groups.

      Creating Jobs

The chemical industry lobbyists are routinely asserting without any substantiation that if this legislation is adopted it will eliminate jobs and hurt the economy. Greenpeace didn’t believe them so we commissioned a neutral firm, Management Information Services, Inc. (MISI), to conduct an independent economic analysis of H.R. 2868 (Senator Lautenberg’s bill has a similar fiscal profile).

The MISI analysis thoroughly rebutted the claims of these opponents of safety and security. MISI shows that the House passed bill will actually
create 8,000 jobs and leverage nearly $2 billion in economic stimulus. Furthermore, the two sectors of the economy that will benefit the most are the chemical industry and publicly owned water treatment plants.

      The bills would:

      • Require the chemical and water facilities to assess their vulnerability to attack, develop a plan to address those vulnerabilities and respond to an emergency, and provide worker training to carry out the plan.
      • Require facilities using dangerous chemicals to evaluate whether the facility could reduce the consequences of an attack by, for example, using a MORE at link...
