Ordinary household odors make her so sick that she is living in a tent in her parent’s backyard. Slideshow: Images From Fox29 Story A doctor in Texas may have unraveled the mystery, reported Fox29’s Robin Taylor. Over the past four years, Jennifer Parker's world has changed dramatically. She went from running her own successful landscaping business to living in a tent in her parent's backyard. "When I go indoors or in a car or in any stores, I get sick," said Parker, 31, who wears an air mask and is treated with oxygen. The mysterious illness left doctors puzzled. Her symptoms ranged from nausea and fatigue to memory loss and then this bizarre one, pink fingerprints. "There was a time when every white surface I would touch would turn pink,” said Parker. At one point, Jennifer ended up in the hospital with convulsions. "She called my husband and said 'I need mom, but I don't know where I am' and hung up the phone," said Mary Ann Parker, Jennifer’s mother. Mary Ann has tried relentlessly to find out what's wrong with her daughter and may have finally gotten an answer. Tests showed Jennifer's townhouse was filled with deadly mold. "I didn't know that the mold was growing in my home because I couldn't see it. It was up in the attic," said Jennifer. A doctor in Texas made the diagnosis. He says the pink fingerprints were her body's way of trying to rid the toxins. The illness left Jennifer allergic to household chemicals in everything from upholstery to detergent. She can only eat organic food and takes a half-dozen vitamins. "My immune system is so weakened from the mold that I'm forced to live out here. It's horrible." The research paper is being released to help physicians and their patients understand the mechanisms, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols available for sickened patients. After reviewing hundreds of peer reviewed studies, analyzing hard data from research conducted on thousands of patients, and incorporating published results of treatment of thousands of patients, the authors embarked on this massive assignment with eyes wide open -- knowing that if the resulting research did not lessen liability of the powerful stakeholders involved, industry would likely attempt to discredit the findings. With the research now concluded, the mysterious illness now has a name: Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome or "CIRS", and when the cause of the illness can be directly linked to a water-damaged building, or ("WDB"), it is called "CIRS-WDB". It exists as a recognizable syndrome that is identifiable and treatable; CIRS-WDB is identified as immunologic in origin, with differential inflammatory responses seen according to (i) genetic susceptibility and (ii) unique aspects of host innate immune responses. CIRS-WDB consistently involves loss of normal control of inflammation and the resulting "inflammation gone wild." Treatment of human illness that is acquired following exposure to the interior environment of WDB involves a series of steps, each correcting the physiologic problems one by one. CIRS-WDB can be readily identified by current methods of clinical diagnoses. This process of diagnosis is supported by (i) identification of unique subsets ("clusters") of symptoms found in epidemiologic cohorts of affected patients; (ii) identification of unique groupings of biomarkers, such as genetic markers, neuropeptides, inflammatory markers, and autoimmune findings. Patients with CIRS-WDB are often given incorrect diagnoses such as depression, stress, allergy, fibromyalgia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and somatization. Those conditions, when actually present, will not improve with therapies employed in CIRS-WDB. CIRS-WDB is acquired primarily from inhalation of microbial products that are contaminants found in the complex mixture of WDB. Re-exposure of previously affected patients will bring about immunological host responses that are enhanced in their rapidity of onset and magnitude, such that these patients are "sicker, quicker." Melinda Ballard, POA's president said, "About 25% of our members have experienced health effects after exposure to toxigenic mold and other organisms in their homes and of those, the vast majority put on the treatment protocol outlined in this paper have reported back to us that their symptoms have either subsided or vanished altogether. While our experience with these members is purely anecdotal, this research paper is not; the findings are irrefutable. Hope I don't get nasty messages. :) Chemical plants put Del. residents at risk July 23, 2010  As a student of the University of Delaware, it came as a shock to me that the state of Delaware holds 19 of the highest-risk chemical plants in the country. There are 6,000 high-risk plants. Of those, 287 plants have switched to safer chemicals and processes since 1999. In turn, 38.5 million people are now protected. Chemical plants that have not switched to safer processes and chemicals need to be taken seriously. In such a developed country as the U.S., it is hard to find areas surrounding chemical plants that do not contain multiple schools and hospitals, as well as fairly large neighborhoods. This means that if we do not put the pressure on our politicians to support legislation that would force chemical plants to reevaluate the processes and chemicals they are using, then millions of people will remain in danger. Chemical plants are a huge target for terrorists because of the amount of damage they could cause if they underwent an attack. In Delaware, there are three chemical plants that are each putting 100,000 people at risk simply because they have not switched to safer practices. The House of Representatives passed legislation on Nov. 9, 2009, that would require the highest risk plants to convert their security and processes to safer practices. A couple off the coast of South Africa enjoying a beautiful day of sailing had a terrifying run in with a massive mammal that left them unharmed, but their craft seriously damaged. "We'd spotted it about 100 meters away and thought that was the end of it," said Paloma Werner, who was on the boat with her boyfriend and business partner, Ralph Mothes. "Then suddenly it was right up beside us." The couple, experienced sailors who operate the Cape Town Sailing Academy together, had noticed the whale as they cruised through Table Bay, near Cape Town harbor, when it approached their vessel. "I assumed it would go underneath the boat, but instead it sprang out of the sea," the 50-year-old said. "I thought surely it can't be on a collision course with us," said 59-year-old Mothes. The Southern right whale, an endangered species common to those waters which can weight up to 60 tons, shot into the air and smashed into the Intrepid, a 32-foot yacht with a steel hull. "We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge," said Werner. Mothes, who was piloting the boat, ducked behind the wheel as the whale thrashed around on the deck and destroyed their mast, before finally slipping back into the water. Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced a comprehensive legislative package that would help to prevent debilitating terrorist attacks at America’s chemical, drinking water, and wastewater facilities. This legislation requires plants to assess their vulnerability, develop plans to address those vulnerabilities, and requires the highest-risk facilities to convert their facilities to safer processes that don’t have the risk of a catastrophic chemical release. The Secure Water Facilities Act (S. 3598) and Secure Chemical Facilities Act (S. 3599) would require changes for the highest-risk facilities, preventing undue burdens on small, low-risk facilities while protecting against the greatest threats. Some of the changes that can be implemented at water and chemical plants include reducing the amount of lethal gases stored on-site or minimizing the use of dangerous chlorine gas. Millions at risk Did you know that the Department of Homeland Security has identified over 5,333 "high-risk" chemical plants in the United States? Just 300 of these plants together put 110 million Americans at risk. And on April 2nd a refinery in Washington State blew up killing eight workers. Meanwhile the failed May 1st car bomb in New York's Times Square was a grim reminder of our continuing vulnerability to terrorism. Safer alternatives exist The greatest risks posed by U.S. chemical plants is their use of huge quantities of poison gases such as chlorine. Fortunately safer processes are available for virtually all of them. In fact, more than 287 chemical plants have switched to safer chemicals or processes over the last ten years. This common sense action has eliminated catastrophic risks to 38 million Americans. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of the highest risk plants have NOT adopted safer processes -- and they won't until laws are passed that require them to do so. Chemical industry lobbyists Since the 9/11 attacks, chemical industry lobbyists, including Dow, DuPont, BP and Exxon have blocked strong legislation. Greenpeace identified 169 lobbyists registered to keep Congress from enacting a strong chemical security law. But in spite of that, last November the House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R. 2868) that will eliminate these risks. And, now the Senate has a new bill that would help save lives. The bills are endorsed by a broad coalition of over 90 environmental, health, and labor groups. Creating Jobs The chemical industry lobbyists are routinely asserting without any substantiation that if this legislation is adopted it will eliminate jobs and hurt the economy. Greenpeace didn’t believe them so we commissioned a neutral firm, Management Information Services, Inc. (MISI), to conduct an independent economic analysis of H.R. 2868 (Senator Lautenberg’s bill has a similar fiscal profile). The MISI analysis thoroughly rebutted the claims of these opponents of safety and security. MISI shows that the House passed bill will actually create 8,000 jobs and leverage nearly $2 billion in economic stimulus. Furthermore, the two sectors of the economy that will benefit the most are the chemical industry and publicly owned water treatment plants. The bills would: Require the chemical and water facilities to assess their vulnerability to attack, develop a plan to address those vulnerabilities and respond to an emergency, and provide worker training to carry out the plan.
