Win Free Green Products on GreenTV …

Win a new Green powered Lawn Trimmer. Win a case of new BPA-free Water Bottles that compress to just over an inch, can be re-used 1,000 times and are earth friendly. Win a portable water purifier that creates healthy water using no electricity. Win a set of newly patented solar lights that are bright, last long and recyclable.
As many are aware, GreenTV did not accept advertising, sponsorship or endorse products during our first 10-years. We chose to focus instead on building a green social community based on trust and ethics.
During that time, we also built a 24/7 Green Research Center from the ground up exceeding green standards and using green products. This gave us a chance to validate the claims and function of true green products in a real world environment.

Today, we continue to test and document green products and will begin to share our findings and offer these products to you at lower prices than the big box stores and planting a tree for each order placed.
Stay tuned to GreenTV for your chance to win!!

Green Jobs and the New Green Economy; Green jobs are jobs that provide products and services which use renewable energy resources, reduce pollution, conserve energy and natural resources and reconstitute waste. So what do green jobs mean for the middle class? First, quite simply, it means more jobs. At a time when good jobs at good wages are harder and harder to come by, it is critical we find new and innovate ways to create more such jobs. Building a new power grid, manufacturing solar panels, weatherizing homes and office buildings, and renovating schools are just a few examples of ways to create new good quality jobs – green jobs – and strengthen the foundation of this country at the same time. Second, more green jobs mean more money in your pocketbook at the end of the month. If we create jobs that aim to reduce your energy costs – like your electric bill and your home heating bill – that means you have more disposable income for other things. Creating more green jobs has multiple benefits. It helps the economy as a whole; it helps our environment; and it will save you money.

New Incentives for Solar or Wind System

We all know solar panels make sense for many American households (and for some - wind power as well). The hurdle most of us have been facing is the high cost of installation coupled with the feeling that the previous cap on federal tax credits, just wasn't enough to motivate us into taking action.
New legislation gives upgraded and extended tax credits (removing the previous $2,000 cap) for residential wind and solar systems installed between 2009 and 2016.
The good news: Starting in 2009 the federal tax credit for residental PV solar and wind systems will be increased to a true 30% (of installation cost), which will be applied to the bottom line of your taxes.
Let's take a look at how much better the new incentives will be. As an example, let's say you are looking at installing a PV solar system at your house and the installation cost is $38,000 (in the state of Delaware).

Small wind turbines will qualify for up to a $4,000 tax credit under the new system. With more affordable residential sized wind systems becoming available, don't be surprised if you see wind becoming more mainstream like solar.
Credits for solar hot water do not change under the new plan. It will remain at 30% of the installed costs with a cap of $2,000. The cap is usually enough to cover about 30% of most projects.
Visit DSIREusa.org for the most up to date, easy to navigate listing of all the federal, state and local incentives in your area.

Global Hospitality Industry Taking Green Steps
Government agencies, developers, and operators in the hospitality industry have numerous opportunities to jump on the green bandwagon, found Ernst & Young in Global Hospitality Insights.
Highlights from the report:
In Asia, resort brands and boutique hotels are developing green concepts, such as Shanghai-based URBN, which calculates the total amount of energy the hotel consumes and purchases credits to offset its footprint via an agreement with Emissions Zero. Hotel guests can also buy carbon credits from the program to offset their own flights.
The Caribbean lodging sector has more Green Globe certified hotels - primarily all-inclusive resorts - than anywhere else in the world. Though small scale, luxury ecotourism resorts modeled from what some believe to be the first “ecotourist resort” (Maho Bay Camp in St. John) continue to be successful within a niche market.
Boutique hotels in Europe are embracing “green” as a differentiator and enjoy cost savings from guest’s conservation measures like towel reuse. European tour operators and agencies often favor environmentally responsible brands. Regulatory planning restrictions, however, limit green building projects.
In India, where nearly a third of energy and water consumption is from commercial buildings (e.g., hotels) the government is stepping in to boost sustainable initiatives with certification mandates.
Nature-based tourism in Latin America is growing. Explora Hotels and Tours in Chile, for instance, provides an educational and unique experience and interaction between guests and nature. Still, in most countries the green movement is still largely undeveloped.
Luxury resorts in the Middle East, such as the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, are pioneering the movement, but the region’s first environmental-friendly budget hotel is expected to open in Dubai by 2009.
The emergence of mandatory greenhouse gas and energy reporting across Australia and New Zealand and the development of emissions trading schemes is pushing the development of greener hospitality industry in Oceania.
In the US, lodging companies are building green and operating green, focusing on legislation and certification (e.g, LEED), and introducing green brands.

Clean Up Your Act

The Ocean Conservancy held its International Coastal Cleanup day this past September and collected over 6 million pounds of garbage from over 33,000 miles of shoreline in 76 countries.

The top 5 items bagged: cigarettes (yuck!), food wrappers/containers, bottle caps, plastic bottles and bags.

10 Things You Can Do To Stop Marine Debris
1. Join Ocean Conservancy’s International Cleanup! OceanConservancy.org\coastalcleanup
2. Clean up your trash. Throw all trash away in proper receptacles, even when you’re not on the water. Pick up any debris you see while out.
3. Collect your monofilament fishing line. Don’t leave fishing line behind and retrieve any other line you may find while fishing, but be careful not to tug on snagged lines, which could be caught on habitat below the surface.4. Contain and properly clean spills when boating. Use oil-absorbent rags and materials to clean spills. Check out the Ocean Conservancy’s Good Mate manual for helpful tips on reducing your negative impacts on the water.5. Recycle used motor oil and oil filters. Local gas stations should have appropriate facilities for recycling these materials. NEVER pour oil, paint, antifreeze, or other household chemicals into an open sewer or down a storm drain.6. Consider organic alternatives to household detergents and cleaners. Use lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda for household cleaning. Avoid using fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and harsh chemical cleaners that can wash into waterways. 7. Choose reusable items and use fewer disposable ones. Use fewer disposable bags when shopping or bring your own reusable ones. 8. Properly dispose of used batteries and electronics. Don’t dump them in landfills, use your local recycling center. These items leach harmful chemicals into the environment that take a long time to disperse.9. Keep streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and storm drains clear of trash and debris – they empty into our ocean.10. Contact your elected representatives and let them know you care about marine debris – and that they should care, too. Vote for candidates who support marine debris prevention and policies that protect our environment.

Join the global movement to unclog our waterways. Find a local event at OceanConcervancy.org/icc. Landlocked? You can still lend a hand at events held at lakes, rivers and ponds.

$100M Exclusive Green TV deal

Philips and Starwood Sign Exclusive ‘Green TV’ Deal Deal estimated to be worth up to $100m in new equipment Over $12m expected in energy savings NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI) today announced the signing of an exclusive three year agreement with Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:HOT) to provide Philips’ latest range of SmartPower2 energy efficient televisions to Starwood’s 460 properties across North America. The deal, which could be worth up to $100 million with existing opportunities and expected growth, will see industry-leading energy efficient televisions installed in new hotels and existing Starwood properties looking to convert to LCD TV technology for the first time.In what is believed to be the biggest 'green TV' deal to date, this agreement is also expected to save the premier global hotel company more than $12 Million dollars in energy costs over the seven year lifetime of the equipment, and reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent when compared with the televisions currently in use.Philips will immediately begin installing these televisions, which are also available to consumers as the ‘EcoTV’. Taking the recently announced growth targets of Starwood North America into consideration, at least 80,000 Philips SmartPower2 TVs will be installed over the course of the next three years. This partnership impacts such well known Starwood brands as St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Westin, Le Méridien, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton and Aloft. These ‘Green’ TVs will also be included in Starwood's newest hotel brand, Element, which is at the forefront of green hoteling, having recently announced that each of its hotels brand-wide are required to pursue the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification."This is a defining agreement for us, and is indicative of the fundamental change in mindset we have implemented around procurement and sourcing, and the partners we want to work with to achieve this," said Paul Davis, Senior Vice President of Global Sourcing at Starwood. "Philips has shown us that it is easy to simultaneously provide our guests with the very latest technology while making a sound business decision that significantly impacts costs and reduces energy consumption."Televisions were an important area to address for Starwood in its search for energy efficiency. Starwood estimates that the average hotel television is operating for six to eight hours every day. Anecdotal evidence highlights that guests regularly leave their hotel rooms without switching off their television, while many hotels also like to welcome guests with a personalized message on the television screen in their room. This deal continues an already successful relationship between Starwood and Philips, which has also been the exclusive provider of energy efficient lighting to the hotel group for more than two years. This lighting includes compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs for hotel rooms, as well as other energy efficient lighting for areas such as lobbies and building beautification.A comparison of hotel rooms reveals some staggering saving numbers.
While configurations differ for each hotel, there is on average one television and three light bulbs in each room, using approximately 455 Watts of energy daily.
San Francisco Announces 10 Million Gallon Biodiesel Plant!

Hot on the heels of San Francisco’s recent celebration of locally-sourced Slow Food, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced a new plan to provide the city by the bay with a local source for sustainable fuel. On Friday the Mayor revealed a proposal between Darling International and the Port of San Francisco to retrofit an old rendering facility to produce biofuel. The new plant will recycle fats, waste grease, and tallow to generate 7.5-10 million gallons of biodiesel per year!
Port of San Francisco, Bio-diesel, biodiesel, Darling International, biofuel San Francisco’s proposed biodiesel plant would be situated within on old rendering facility in the Hunter’s Point district owned by Darling International. Under the plan the facility will be renovated to turn grease waste into useable, sustainable energy. Although the agreement has not yet been signed, it is expected that the city will purchase the fuel to cut down on shipments from the Midwest while feeding San Francisco’s biodiesel fleet of 1,500 vehicles.
Mayor Gavin Newsom has stated that: “This facility will serve as a model for cities throughout the world who aim to reduce their carbon footprint and transform their grease waste into useable, sustainable energy. Turning waste generated by local restaurants and other businesses into a sustainable fuel source is yet another major step in reaching our goals of carbon neutrality for City Government by 2020, zero emission public transit by 2020, a 75% recycling rate by 2010, and zero waste in 2020.”

Geothermal Part of the Answer? Google Thinks So...

A recent report
by MIT on EGS estimated just 2% of the heat 3 - 10 km below below the
continental United States is more than 2,500 times the country's total
annual energy use. Posted by Charles Baron, Climate and Energy Team, Google.org: Today, as part of Google's Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative, Google.org announced more than $10 million in investments and grants in Enhanced Geothermal
Systems (EGS) technology. EGS expands the potential of traditional
geothermal energy by orders of magnitude. The traditional geothermal
approach relies on finding naturally occurring pockets of steam or hot
water. The EGS process, by comparison, replicates these conditions by
fracturing hot rock, circulating water through the system, and using
the resulting steam to produce electricity in a conventional turbine. EGS has the potential to provide clean renewable electricity 24/7,
at a cost cheaper than coal. The ability to produce electricity from
geothermal energy has been thought exclusive to locations such as
California and Iceland. However EGS could allow us to harness the heat
within the earth almost anywhere. To see see the massive size of the US
geothermal resource accessible by EGS, check out their Google Earth layer.
For more on EGS, watch this video, featuring Dr. Steve Chu, Director of
the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Dr. Jefferson Tester,
professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT and lead author of a major
recent study on EGS: Our EGS partners to date include: * AltaRock Energy: $6.25 million investment to develop
innovative technologies to achieve significant cost reductions and
improved performance in EGS projects * Potter Drilling: $4
million investment in two tranches, to develop new approaches to lower
the cost and expand the range of deep hard rock drilling, a critical
element to large-scale deployment of EGS * Southern Methodist
University Geothermal Laboratory: $489,521 grant to improve
understanding of the size and distribution of geothermal energy
resources and to update geothermal mapping of North America Working
with Geodynamics, one of the world's leading EGS development companies,
we modeled Geodynamics' first 50 MW system at the Cooper Basin in
SketchUp, Google's 3D modeling technology. To see how EGS works, check
out the animation of the SketchUp model or download it. EGS is heating up around the world. Australia, Germany, and the
European Union are currently leading the technology and
commercialization race. All 50 U.S. states, Europe, Russia, China, and
India all have substantial thermal resources accessible by EGS. While the US debates drilling in the ocean for oil, we are focused
on drilling for renewable energy - and lots of it - right beneath our
feet. A recent report by MIT on EGS estimated just 2% of the heat 3 - 10 km below below the
continental United States is more than 2,500 times the country's total
annual energy use. The United States needs more aggressive government
policies to help catch up to other nations, including expanded R&D
funding, a national renewable portfolio standard, and reliable tax
incentives. For more on our geothermal policy agenda, read this brief. EGS has enormous potential to cleanly address the world's energy
challenges. We look forward to continuing our efforts to advance EGS
through technology, investment, policy and information.

We're very excited about the upcoming Green Drinks Delaware on September 5th. It will be held at the fabulous Delaware Center for Horticulture from 5:30-8pm. We'll be there shooting video and interviewing Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jack Markell.
Also at the center that evening will be the Trifolia Exhibit (the work of three emerging artists who take their inspiration from nature - on artist combines shoemaking with horticulture and
constructs one-of-a-kind, life size shoes made from plant material and
leather!)
If you are not familiar with The Delaware Center for Horticulture
(DCH), they a non-profit community
resource organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and appreciation
of gardening, horticulture, and conservation. Their focus is on
the greening of our urban environment and include educational programs
for children, teens and adults. They also have outdoor garden and
pavilion available for weddings and special events and an extensive library. All of which will
be open for our enjoyment.
Jack has been thinking green for a long time. Recently he was involved with the Bluewater Wind project - which will not only be the first offshore wind farm in Delaware, but also the first offshore wind farm in the USA! Jack will give short presentation on his vision for Delaware's future and his specific plans to protect our environment. So be sure to come out and see what he has to say.

HyGridding: Not just off Grid, New Power Generation

Have you heard about hygridding?
It's the next step past simply being off-grid. It's about generating more power (mostly through solar & wind) than you can consume and feeding the excess back into the grid. At last check 37 states in the US had adopted "net-metering" - the regulation that states if you can produce more energy than you consume and back feed the grid, you local utility company is required to "buy" it back from you. Your electric meter spins backwards, creating credits to your account.
Being off grid simply removes you from being a consumer of electricty supplied by your utility company. With hygridding, you actually become a mini-utility, so not only are you no longer consuming electric from the grid, you are actually supplying it!! Pretty cool.
Check out this Wired article about hygridding. They say we are at the dawn of the hygrid age. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.05/solar.htm l
