  • Actually, most state ordinances call for the turbine hub to be located 30 feet higher than the tallest structure within a 500' radius.

From a performance perspective, having a 100' tower would be wonderful however not very practical due to fabrication and installation costs. There is a tradeoff, between cost vs production.

The reason why the Skystream is bundled in a 34, 42, 45, and 60' tower setup is to alleviate the costs on the average homeowner who can install the unit using a pickup truck rather than having to rent a 20 ton crane for the day. Also if u were to compare costs of purchasing a 100' tower including its delivery one would understand why it's not a viable option.

Michael Mercurio is a certified wind site assessor in the state of New Jersey and is one of the board members who helped write the New Jersey Model Ordinance for Wind, he is also one of the Sr. Consultants for the Offshore wind farm that is to be placed 15 miles off the coast of New Jersey.

There is a great deal of wind by the shore, where Mr. Mercurio resides and since the Skystream has the ability to apply different loads by calculating it's tip speed ratio (TSR), it is optimized for such applications, this video was posted to illustrate the quiet operation of the Skystream outside of a residence.

Since the draft of the ordinance Mr. Mercurio has taken down his Skystream.

  • Nice video and always glad to see people using renewable energy systems. However the turbine in this video is situated far too close to the roof of the house and surrounding obstructions from a vertical perspective. The turbine should be situated a minimum of fifty (50) feet above any obstacle within 1/4 mile for maximum year-round performance.

In the case of the Skystream unit this means a new tower not the basic model that ships as the standard configuration. A reputable wind power dealer would perform a detailed site survey before selling and installing such a system and would have made the proper recommendations.
