Actually, most state ordinances call for the turbine hub to be located 30 feet higher than the tallest structure within a 500' radius. From a performance perspective, having a 100' tower would be wonderful however not very practical due to fabrication and installation costs. There is a tradeoff, between cost vs production. The reason why the Skystream is bundled in a 34, 42, 45, and 60' tower setup is to alleviate the costs on the average homeowner who can install the unit using a pickup truck rather than having to rent a 20 ton crane for the day. Since the draft of the ordinance Mr. Mercurio has taken down his Skystream. The turbine should be situated a minimum of fifty (50) feet above any obstacle within 1/4 mile for maximum year-round performance. In the case of the Skystream unit this means a new tower not the basic model that ships as the standard configuration. A reputable wind power dealer would perform a detailed site survey before selling and installing such a system and would have made the proper recommendations.
